Peter Heidrich schuf Variationen über der Welt liebstes Lied zum Wiegenfest und macht daraus 11 musiklaische Kleinkunstwerke, die es in sich haben. Im Rekordtempo geht es einmal quer durch die Musikgeschichte bis zum furiosen Höhepunkt Gidon Kremer brilliert als Zigeunergeiger in einem mitreißenden Csardas.

I heard some of this on the radio (BBC Radio 3, if you must know) while I was having a lie-in, and I just couldn't stop smiling. The Happy Birthday variations are just superb fun and worth the price on their own - I especially recommend the Tango and the Csardas for anyone looking to be cheered up. All the other stuff on the disk is fine too. I hope the musicians had as much fun making this as I do listening to it, time after time.

Gidon Kremer and his young orchestra provide a wonderful party mix of the beautiful and the downright ridiculously silly. The musical jokes are actually funny, as well as deft. Hard to believe that Kremer has become most closely associated with such composers as Schnittke, Part, Vasks and Shostakovich when listening to this remarkably undoom-laden frivolity. Brilliant in every way.

If you're looking for an unusual birthday present for someone then I can thoroughly recommend this CD! I heard a snippet from it on the radio a few years ago. I thought I was listening to Mozart and the tune seemed familiar but it took me a few minutes to work out that the tune was Happy Birthday. I bought the CD and have found it delightfully querky! I love the different styles of Happy Birthday - from Haydn to ragtime, and even a czardas and a tango. In addition, a similar treatment is given to Auld Lang Syne - Auld Lang Syne in the style of the Moonlight Sonata - can you imagine it??!! It's brilliant. I love it and have given it to quite a few friends now when their birthday's have come around.
