Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Just when you thought you owned every possible calming/relaxing/smooth/chillout classical track, up pops Smooth Classics for Rough Days, a three-CD set from Classic FM. The format is familiar: slow movements (such as the gripping Adagietto from Mahler's Symphony No. 5) mixed with slushy pieces from the 19th century (such as Bruch's Romance for viola and orchestra), peppered with a few contemporary treats (witness one of Ludovico Einaudi's piano pieces).

The collection is, however, far from predictable. Music by Pachelbel, Albinoni, Handel, Mozart and Rachmaninov, typically the staples of this sort of collection, are interspersed with pieces from John Tavener (a slightly stodgy performance of "The Lamb"), Vitezslav Novak (a pupil of Dvorák) and Peter Maxwell Davies (the nostalgic Farewell to Stromness).

Considering that Smooth Classics for Rough Days is for "when the rain just won't stop falling… when the phone hasn't stopped ringing… bad hair days and bad mood days", it does seem ironic that so many of the pieces chosen have rather depressing themes, notably suicide (Delius' "The Walk to the Paradise Garden"), a dance of death (Sibelius' Valse Triste) and war (John Williams' "Hymn to the Fallen"). As always, this is a smartly presented box set from Classic FM which includes introductory notes to each of the 33 pieces. --Rebecca Agnew

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music from Classic FM - yet again!, 3 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Every year at this time Classic FM bring out a new triple CD set - and this year's is even better than the ones that have come before. I didn't think they'd be able to better "Time to Relax", which was last year's album - but they have! And they've done it in some style too by choosing music from their evening programme "Smooth Classics at Seven", which is presented by the legendary John Brunning. I can't recommend this album enough. And it does just what it says on the box. I've got my copy in the car at the moment - it's perfect as an antidote to a journey from Hull to Manchester on the M62 every morning. I'm seriously considering ordering two more copies - one for the office and one for home - the music choice really is that good. This is excellent stress-busting stuff - and the quality of the performances and the recordings is absolutely top notch. My own personal favourite tracks come from the pianist/composer Ludovico Einaudi. But there is plenty on the three discs to choose from. This would make the perfect Christmas present for a stressed out executive or for a parent who fancies something to chill-out to after they've put the kids to bed!
