the band!, 19 Jun 2003
This dvd is for all who love great music or can appreciate great music. The Band's obivious enjoyment of playing their last concert together cant help but leave you in awe as they whizz through some of their best and most reknowned songs, 'Up on cripple creek', 'The weight', and 'The night they drove old dixie down'. But the influx of greats who accompany them through the evening is unbelievable and inconceivable in today's music world. Bob 'da man' Dylan is on top form, we see dr John, Emmylou Harris, 'the Hawk', Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, the Staples, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Diamond (i hope i mentioned eveyone!)rocking it out. Even Neil Young coming on with a version of 'Helpless' (Joni Mitchell does backing). Just watch Rick and Robbie gaze at the ceiling as a coked up Neil Young tries to find the right chord "got it now Robbie". Scorsese makes them look so cool and what all rock bands should srtive to be, in it for the music and thrill of playing. The stories from the "16 years" on the road are also well worth sitting through, a real playful description of the 60s travelling band. But the van Morrison performance towards the end is amazing and the band are simply taken by his second-to-known voice, i loved it and haven't got a van Morrison record but i will now. The best concert/docu dvd to date. If you like good music with a bit of soul and expectional playing get it, GET IT NOW!!!! Anoher thing... between songs we get a rendition of 'The Canterbury Tales' and some nutter who does a very witty take on the Lord's prayer. Very amusing.
