Minuteman are an indie four-piece built around the voice and songs of Maidstone-born frontman Matt Jones;
Resigned to Life is their debut album, and it's a heck of a fine start. Minuteman have a rare knack for giant, surging melody and an intriguing way with an arrangement--traits they share with their closest spiritual contemporaries,
Mull Historical Society (Minuteman's early single "Big Boy", and MHS's "Watching Xanadu" could have been separated at birth).
Minuteman's specialty is managing to build songs that, while being accessibly and agreeably tuneful, do not always proceed as might be expected. "Quality Time" lurches suddenly and effectively into a choked, claustrophobic cacophony of distortion. "I Love" begins as a gentle ballad, backed by a twitching drum machine that suggests a clock ticking down to something; cleverly, however, the song never quite explodes as threatened. Resigned to Life is an extremely promising debut. --Andrew Mueller
