Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Using anti-virus software isn't enough these days; you need to actively block off your PC from online security risks with a firewall. Norton Internet Security 2003 lets you do both, plus it blocks ads, filters spam and includes parental controls.

Setting up a firewall can be complex but the Security Assistant wizard walks you through all the choices you need to make, and it automatically sets up PCs on a home network to work behind the firewall. The Program Scan looks for Internet-enabled software on your system so you can let all your Internet tools have access at once; you can add other software to the list as well. When a program you haven't specified tries to connect the Alert Assistant helps you decide whether to allow it, block it or tweak the settings; it checks both file names and checksums to make sure an application hasn't been tampered with and you get specific suggestions rather than generic tips.

Similarly it uses signatures and detects common techniques rather than just looking at file names to spot incoming attacks. If your PC is attacked, it will block the source address automatically for 30 minutes, and you can see where the attack is coming from. If you need to be completely secure you can block all traffic in and out. And you can easily see how you're protected and if there are any problems from the red and green indicators in the Status display.

If you share your PC, everyone will need anti-virus and firewall protection, but you can choose whether to turn on the ad and spam blocking tools, the privacy controls that protects private information and the parental controls for blocking particular Web sites, Usenet newsgroups and programs. Symantec categorises these so you can keep people away from gambling and job sites as well as adult sites, and you can add specific sites that you want blocked or allowed. It's no substitute for monitoring what children do on your PC but it's certainly a help. You can also configure the settings for privacy, blocking spam and pop-up and pop-under adverts.

Norton AntiVirus 2003 is one of the best anti-virus packages on the market; Norton Firewall is a powerful tool too, and Internet Security 2003 combines them with other useful tools, plus a foolproof setup that protects you without making what you do want to do online too difficult.--Mary Branscombe

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential security software, 24 Feb 2003
By P. Jones - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I recently bought this product because I am running a network with three other people, and my computer is the Internet Gateway. I was mostly concerned because we are all Students, and have important files, like incomplete essays, lecture notes and other coursework on our computers.

Upon opening the box, I was presented with an extremely comprehensive manual, and the installation CD. Before installing the software proper, I had to scan my computer from the CD, which was as easy as putting the CD in the drive and rebooting. Installing the software was even less painless, a simple matter of inserting the CD and following the on screen prompts.

The included software is everything you need to keep your computer secure, the highlights of which are the firewall and antivirus, but includes privacy control, spam alert and parental controls, while LiveUpdate automatically keeps every part of the suite up to date. Everything runs quietly in the system tray, only disturbing you occasionally to inform you of critical threats, or to remind you a complete system scan is due. Basically, it leaves you alone and just gets on with it (Why can't all software do that?). If you do decide to tinker with the settings, the menu system is well thought out and grouped into categories. Everything is very well explained, but in English not computer, helping you make informed decisions.

The price is very good for such a comprehensive and essential piece of software (don't forget if you're a student like me, you can apply for the student license which is cheaper, also available from Amazon.)

All in all, I strongly recommend you invest in some form of Internet Security, and in my personal experience Norton comes highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safe on the Internet, 2 Oct 2002
By jockay (Newtownabbey, Co. Antrim Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
You dont have to be paranoid to go onto the Internet and feel a little apprehensive about operating your Bank Account on-line. I have just installed Norton Inernet Security 2003 and feel a glow of confidence.

Norton have made an excellent job of the Instal procedure and lead the user through it very gently. At all points and after the Installation is complete the user is confident that they are in charge and informed about all aspects of the operation.

Two things to watch - keep a note of your Internet Connection settings and dont set the " protection level " too high. Otherwise this is an excellent investment

4.0 out of 5 stars Value for money, but problem with network, 4 Oct 2002
By Christophe Mouze - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I choose this product over Norton Antivirus and Panda Titanium because of the added programs, and in particular Spam alert and Add blocking.
Installation was easy, and Norton Antivirus swiftly got rid of a few viruses that my previous antivirus, Mc Afee, had let through, but shortly after installation, my home network stopped working. It took me a couple of hours work to figure out that the problem came from Personnal Firewall, and after another couple of hours trying to configure it for my network, I gave up and ended up disabling it.
This network problem is the reason why I won't give it five stars. Otherwise, the product is excellent, easy to install, configure and update, and good value (even without the Firewall).
