Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sony has made a real name for itself with its Palm OS PDAs, and the Clié PEG-SJ30 is a good example of why. One of the first things you notice about the SJ30 is how well it has been designed. Sony has made its application shortcut buttons very small keeping the SJ30 as tiny as possible. There is a flip over lid which locks into a slot on the back of the casing nicely. This means you don't have to add to the overall size or weight of the SJ30 to provide screen protection. The outer casing is typically Sony in style: silver metal that should take some knocks.

Specifications-wise this Clié has plenty going for it. The display is 320 x 320 pixels with a colour palette of 65,536 colours. Sony has tweaked Palm OS version 4 to allow this higher than usual resolution which makes it easier to read the screen and to display more data at any one time. There is 16 MB of memory for applications and data storage, and a Memory Stick slot so you can expand this amount if you need to. The 33 MHz Dragonball Processor provides plenty of oomph, and the internal rechargeable battery should provide power for around 12 days of average use.

The SJ30 includes a range of software over and above the standard Palm fare. What you get includes PictureGear Pocket for viewing still images, Clié Paint for editing images and producing new ones, World Alarm Clock and alarm and round the world time machine, and gMovie for looking at digital video. You also get Documents to Go so you can view and edit Word and Excel files while on the move, and Intellisync Lite for synchronisation with Outlook and Lotus Organiser on your PC.

Sony has proved time and again that it knows how to make a PDA. If you are looking for a mid-priced PDA with style, this could be a good choice. --Sandra Vogel

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony Clie PEG-SJ130, 15 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This is a neat strong little box which does everything that I need a PDA to do which is to store and retrieve addresses and dates, and to remind me of things to do. It has a good screen and a good operating system. There's enough expandable memory and it can interface with Outlook, Word and Excel on my PC without apparent difficulty.
It's as easy to use as a paper based system once one has got used to it and will do a lot more things as well as being less at risk of losing everything. It would be useful to have a full size (poss. folding) keyboard for entering data and text rapidly.
What would I like to see as additional features? Firstly, I'd like an option for it to be more rugged, splash proof and shock proofed and with a lanyard (I work outside a lot in harsh environments).
Secondly I'd like the option of a louder alarm noise, which was easier to set so I could use it as an alarm clock.
Third, I'd like a seamless integration with a mobile phone - perhaps a miniaturized phone which can use the card slot.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Time Saving Business Tool I've ever Brought, 10 Nov 2002
By A Customer
As a self employed electrician i spend alot of time doing paperwork in the office aswell as out on site. I was always carrying around lots of pieces of scrap paper in my pockets with important information on relating to prices for jobs, materials, contacts and test results. Trouble is I kept losing them!. The Sony Clie SJ30 has removed this problem and i now look totally professional too!

The information provided in the package was sufficient to get me up and running in about half an hour, though due to multiple language support this wasn't all in a single booklet so perhaps Sony could supply a single language user manual with all the details from 'getting started' to 'Hotsync' and 'adding other applications' in one document. Once up and running the user interface is very easy to use and I was soon scrolling through the different applications that come pre-loaded. The colour display is impressive as is the size and styling of the Clie. so far i have not lost or forgotten any information because everything is now on my Sony Clie and when i get home i simply downloaded everything to my home PC, to print it out. But as soon as i can afford to i will be investing in a IR lead and then i'll be able to print certificates on site before i leave and save a fortune on printer consumables in the process!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, 6 Dec 2002
By A Customer
I have previously owned a Psion Revo and 5MX but wanted somthing more up to date. I tried the Clie SL10 and Clie 625 prior to deciding on the SJ30. The SJ30 has a great screen, very bright and clear, its lightwieght but a little fatter than the SL10. Connection to the PC is quick and easy and no problems where encountered with setting the unit up. I also use the SJ30 attached to a Garmein Etrex GPS and its provides excellent route finding facilities in this combination.

Well done Sony...
