5.0 out of 5 stars Anthony Quinn brings the story to life, 15 Dec 2007
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The Ernest Hemmingway story is too short to go into detail without revealing the surprises; however it is about (you guessed it) an old fisherman, that should be over the hill, going out to sea from Cuba to catch fish. He has 84 days of bad luck and with any luck this is about to change (or is it?)

While the book can drag and be a tad redundant; this film adaptation puts life into the story. It is almost as if the story was written for Quinn. I have no intention of calling this a remake.

Anthony Quinn requested his part as a birthday present (his 75th) from his producer.

Anthony Quinn ... Santiago
Gary Cole ... Tom Pruitt
Patricia Clarkson ... Mary Pruitt
Joe Santos ... Lopez
Valentina Quinn ... Angela
Francesco Quinn ... Santiago as a Young Man
Paul Calderon ... Anderez

Notice a few more Quinn's on the list of actors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Took my breath away!, 16 Mar 2003
This film is such a milestone that it's a shame that it will probably never be screened again in it's original IMAX format. I was lucky enough to catch it during it's limited run in late 1999 when it was playing at the Sony IMAX in New York City. Anyways, Petrov's animation technique involves oil painting on glass, which most animation geeks are familiar with. When combined with IMAX the result is stunning. There is one shot near the end of the film with shows the Cuban fishing village at night with the stars in the background. The stars shimmer like diamonds set into dark blue velvet - incredible, beyond words, even if you are jaded about "art house" animation. If you ever hear of this film screening at an IMAX venue - don't miss it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not true., 16 April 2006
By DP (UK) - See all my reviews
As a film, passable. However, if you want to see a dramatised account of the novella, this film is not great. With totally awful side plot with the American writer, the only good part of the film is the end!
