4.0 out of 5 stars wonderful memories, 23 Mar 2006
By A Customer
The only time I have heard Merrie England and seen it performed, was as a young girl, when so many of these operettas were popular. It was with great pleasure I listened to this recording and took a trip down memory lane. The melodies are very hummable, and the quality of the singing is very high - though I think perhaps a larger chorus would have increased enjoyment.
Having enjoyed listening to it so much, I feel rather regretful that these operettas are no longer as well-known as they used to be; they are very easy on the ear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic recording., 17 Aug 2009
By Mr. M. Spiers "mdbs1812" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the classic recording from the 60's but still sounding fantastically fresh. Some superb singing from soloists - highlights being June Bronhill's "Who shall say that love is cruel?" - elegant, supremely musical with absolute technical security over a dazzling cadenza. Crisp diction is a feature throughout the singing of all the soloists but especially from this rather forgotten soprano. There is much humour to these performances and the character parts are handled expertly. William McAlpine's rather heavy Scottish accent charmingly adds something to an under-documented voice of much fame in its day, and it is wonderful to hear him here on top form and so well recorded. The orchestral playing is slick and taut with brisk tempos and requisite lightness of touch from conductor Michael Collins. Edward German's music is very out of fashion these days and this recording is proof, (if ever it were needed) that there is so much to enjoy in these effervescent operettas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Merrie England, 28 Jul 2009
By Mrs. Catherine J. Cox - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having performed this about 10 years ago, I was delighted to be able to get a copy on C.D. It brought back many happy memories, even if the cat is not impressed with my singing!
