Amazon.co.uk Review

Circle reminds us that, despite his less than successful dalliances with film and TV, Eddie Izzard's reputation rests securely on his genius for stand-up comedy. Circle comes on the back of an ever-growing global touring schedule, with this particular performance being recorded in New York. Always sensitive to his environment, the comedian throws in several local references to gratify his strongly partisan audience. Much of the delight of an Izzard performance is watching him weave from topic to topic, often painting himself into a corner, and Circle is no exception. A little slow to get started, once he finds his stride this is a veritable masterclass in live comedy, dealing with subjects ranging from the absurd to the everyday. Indeed, Izzard is almost a human equivalent of The Far Side cartoon series, weaving the worlds of the bizarre and the ordinary together to make fresh points: witness his show-stopping account of the Death Star canteen. This is a must for all fans, equally so for those yet to fall under his spell. --Phil Udell

5.0 out of 5 stars The Funniest Guy On The Planet Returns!, 23 Nov 2002
By Chris (Nottingham, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
At long last, Eddie returns with a new performance. Been anticipating this since I heard it was being released and bought it on the day it came to the stores! A friend of mine asked "...has he still got it...?" Oh yes!! I have Definite Article, Live At The Ambassadors, Unrepeatable, Glorious and Dress To Kill, and have enjoyed watching Eddie grow in stature in his performances over the years. One of the things I like most about Eddie's routines are the historical pieces - and there are plenty here. But "talking to the animals" and "the Death Star canteen" pieces are also genius and hilarious. Favourite quote, when talking about Americans (said in a kind of despairing way) - "...do you know there are other countries...?" And this was shot in New York, an indication of Eddie's confidence in his ability and extremely funny performance. There is also a dig at Saving Private Ryan, in so much as not 1 English soldier was seen throughout the entire movie - even though we'd been fighting for years! Eddie holds an audience in the palm of his hand - and they - quite rightly - relish it. The DVD has bonus material featuring a running commentary by Eddie himself, trivia tracks, there is a documentary, it is subtitled in 9 languages and there is also a HUGE bonus: A rough-cut of Eddie's stand up show performed in Paris! Remember "le singe et sur la branch?"...The picture quality is first rate and the sound is excellent. An extremely watchable show from all areas. Talented? Oooh yeah...Very funny, very clever, still has that 'genius' and so what more is there to say other than..."So, yeah..." Apart from you must get this!

4.0 out of 5 stars So is it better than his other shows?, 20 Nov 2002
By J. Smith (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well quite simply, no. However it is still Eddie Izzard whom I believe to be the best stand up comedian alive. There are some new, very funny sketches, some of them being up there with the best (I won't say what they are as it could ruin them). However I suppose to compare this with his other shows is cruel in a certain way, simply as Definite Article, Dress to Kill and Glorious are the funniest stand up shows I have ever seen. The DVD is very well produced, an interesting behind the scenes extra where he rather bizarrely gets pulled over by the police! If you like commentaries then its got one too although personally I find them boring. So yes it is well worth buying if you have never seen Eddie before, and still well worth buying if you have seen his other shows. Like I said, perhaps not as amazing as his originals but still shades above the rest. (Oh one last thing, in the first few minutes, if you recognise some of the material from previous shows, don't worry that's pretty much all the recycled material!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Too thin...., 1 Dec 2002
I love Izzard and do think he is one of the best stand-up comedians - if not the best - and its in that perspective
that Cicle falls below the expected standard. His other shows all left me exhaustet of laughing and this one does the same
at times. The my main problems with this dvd is that its looks like a routin show from Eddie, with to many familiar themes and too many jokes that are executed badly. The show is taped in 2000 and I find that weird! Eddie uses alot of jokes and themes that is based on contemporary events and when you see the show with 2 years delay the edge is simply gone. Even though most people will remember that Charlton Heston is in "plannet of the apes", a joke based on that is not exactly cutting edge. The last negativ thing about this is that its taped in the US - again! Being British he makes to many jokes that are based on the ignorance of americans, american cultur, etc etc. His first shows from London was more rough and the audiance were not treated like morrons but as the enemy - true stand-up style.

All that said its still a brilliant show even though fans of Izzard should and could have expected more. If your new to Izzards mad world you most surdently must buy his other shows and then think about renting this at Blockbusters.....
