assemblage 23's "defiance" for me was the most eagerly awaited release of last year,although i was excited,on the other hand i felt nervous,how could a23 improve on their last release "failure"? the truth is they cant,but what they have done is created another exellent album which sits along side covenants "northern light" as the best synthpop/ebm/futurepop album of last year!for those of you who are not familiar with a23,it is the one vision of canadian "tom shear" who is responsible for everything in a23,he produces,dark,downtempo,midpaced,upbeat,incredible synthpop with the most imaginative and intelligent lyrics,that make you think,cry and understand.most of the songs on "defiance" and all the other a23's albums seem to reflect "tom shears" life and his way of thinking at the time he writes the albums "failure" for example was a album dripping with realism and negativity because of the personal loss in his life,"defiance"on the other hand seems a bit more positive in outlook hence the term "defiance".i wont lie assemblage 23 are a very personal band,and to the average person would be extremly deppressing and difficult to get into but to me a23 is a band that will stand the test of time and "defiance" will allways be a brilliant synthpop album. reccomended to anyone into "depeche mode" and "vnv nation"
