I was very pleased to find this Box Set as I first picked up some of these works on vinyl and had been waiting for them to appear in this format.

You won't find a fiery version of Brahms here, or Brahms the second Beethoven.

The Halle Orchestra under James Loughran gives us something far more interesting: Brahms the lyrical composer who is less a late romantic and more a new classicist frequently heading in the direction of early 20th century music.

While there is a general lightness to the performances this is due to no lack of depth to the interpretations. The overall impression is of suppleness as stormy passages are steered towards rest and back again. The soloists all aquit themselves well and there are some particulary fine rich textures from the strings.

From what I have said so far it follows that the first symphony does not recieve a show stopping performances, instead its subtleties are revealed. The approach bears special dividends in the last two symphonies. In the third symphony the music has premonitions of Sibelius (2nd movement), and what Dvorak gained from Brahms can be heard in the 3rd movement.

The other pieces are of a similar quality but the best performance is saved till last. The Violin Concerto with Maurice Hasson as soloist is a gem of a recording. He deftly describes every nuance in the score and plays parts from a wooing lover (in the adagio) to Old Nick on the roof (the final movement). Even if you prefer a more vigourous Brahms the set is worth consideration on the strenght of this performance alone.

What a wonderful collection of Brahm's works, beautifully played by a much under-rated Orchestra.
Simply relax and enjoy this interpretation of his Symphonies, which bring out the romatic and dramatic nature of each composition.
I particularly enjoy Smmphony No1, which is just wonderful. Some other recordings state Brahm's work as too harsh, but this recording brings out the music at it's best.
From beginner to experienced listener, this is a must have and, presents such good value!

I loved these versions at the time of their release in the early 70s. There is no bombast, and the Halle's lighter string sound (compared to the big-name orchestras) allows the inner parts to shine through. In this, Loughran's accounts presage the more recent SCO/ Mackerras versions.
To hear this effect, you only have to go as far as the first few bars of the First: you'll hear the difference.
I'm delighted these have been re-issued on CD and at this price should be snapped up, whether you're new to these amazing works or are familiar with other accounts.
