5.0 out of 5 stars Piece of musical history, 7 Oct 2006
By John R. Murdoch (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having first bought the record 30 years ago I was delighted to discover that the concert had also been recorded on film. The DVD portrays the performance very much better than the audio track alone.
The sound and video quality are surprisingly good and Jon Lord's commentary gives fascinating insight into the event. The concert beautifully shows how far apart the worlds of classical and rock music were at that time. It is one of the first bridges between the 2 musical genres demonstrating that they could in future complement each other and live comfortably together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jon Lord is the classical master, 28 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Sadly I was only 4 when JL launched himself into writing this classical masterpiece in 12 weeks (through uneeded pressure by management) and sadly had to wait a further 30 years to relive what was clearly a piece of music history at the RAH in 1999. The original video has reasonable sound quality for the time and having all these years listened to the LP its great to see Richie play his original Gibson and DP mk2 (after their first live performance of Child in Time) create a master performance which would unfold into what is clearly the best band that ever walked this planet - buy it even to play along side the 1999 RPO performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good release, 9 Nov 2002
By A Customer
The picture quality is very good. Though overall the performance is not a good as the 1999 production. Ritchie Blackmore's solo is excellent and the second movement acts as a show case for Gillan's Voice perfectly.

The Jon Lord Commentary is also interesting

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's drum solo?
Strange that nobody's noticed that one of the best ever Ian Paice's drum solos was cut out (comparing to audio CD). It's a real shame and that's why I'll keep to CD (and vinyl).
