Dragon Ball Z: Budokai (PS2)

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai faithfully recreates the popular Dragon Ball animated series, giving you the power to fight up to 23 familiar friends and foes in a variety of scenarios. It's not for the weak-of-thumb, so start out with a little practice, learning the powerful kicks, punches, and elaborate combinations that will lead you to victory. When you've mastered the skills and warmed up your thumbs, jump into the tournament ring and defeat opponents--every victory wins you money to spend at Mr Popo's, buying and trading skills to trounce future opponents.

The Story segment of the game may be the most fun for fans, though it diverges from standard gameplay. Where most games have long, elaborate series of gameplay, intercut with story, Dragon Ball Z intercuts very short interactive battles with long animated sequences portraying everything from the Saiyan Saga through to the Cell Games. The animation and voicing in these sequences mirrors the television series and even uses the very same voice actors as the show. Some fans may be disappointed when gameplay ends with the Cell Games--or they may take it as a sure sign that future games will be released to cover the remaining sagas.

Fun? Yes. Flawless? No. There's not a whole lot under the surface of the sagas--what you see is what you get. And you also might get a little carpal tunnel syndrome along the way--the button-mashing combinations needed to pull off the most awesome moves may not be friendly to fans' forearms. Still, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai may be a slam dunk for fans of the series who now have the opportunity not just to watch the sagas, but to participate in them. --Maile Bohlmann

4.0 out of 5 stars Well, its a title worthy of Dragonball Z Fans, at last, 15 Nov 2002
By Mr. Daniel J. C. Lillie "DJCL" (London) - See all my reviews

I was lucky enough to actually play budokai recently, and I was genuinely suprised at how above average it is. I use 'above average' rather than good because, although this game is good, there is still a lot of work to be put in before they get it right. Anybody who has played the average/poor effort of bandai's Dragonball GT Final bout, will be pleased to hear this is a lot better. This is mainly because the game is faster. GT looked ok, but it lacked that essential Dragonball fighting speed that we so badly need. So, the speed then, as we have established, is there. The graphics are ok, but are not great, they certainly dont push the PS2 for power. Also in the budokai mode, you can get points to build up your character, of which you can develop new moves for, which adds some depth and longetivity. The story mode is good, if not almost great, where you can choose to progress either as Goku or Gohan through the saiyan saga up to the cell saga. This brings me onto the next point. Budokai is created by infogrames, which, is a british/european developer. No offence, but budokai utterly reeks of 'outsider development'. I think they need to do a bit more research in terms of the series. Why not go up to the Buu saga? Why the fudge have they put in Raditz and Great Saiyaman as characters? Why not SS4 Goku, or Bebi Vegeta etc...?(I know they are GT characters, but they would have been cool secret characters.) It seems that they have all watched the programme a few times, then decided to make a game on it.
Enough negative vibes though, Budokai is definately worth buying if you are a DBZ Fan, totally. If not, then try before you buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best DBZ Game out there!, 18 Dec 2002
By Gareth Browne "G" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is without a doubt the best DBZ game ever made. When I had Dragonball GT: Final Bout on the PS1 I loved that game to bits because they captured the characters perfectly, but the thing lacking in the game was a solid story mode which is Dragonball Z: Budokai's strong point. The Story mode in Budokai is excellent. It is just like if you really are watching Dragonball Z on Television and you are taking part in it. The Saiyan, Namek and Android Saga's are very detailed in the game and follows the same storyline as the Television Series. The graphics are very detailed and the surroundings are like those in the TV Series Saga's.
Other modes included in the game are the World Tournament Mode, Duel Mode, Edit Skills and Legend Of Mr.Satan.
There are lots of secret characters to find and you also have to find the Seven Dragonballs as well so you can wish for your ultimate fighter.

This game is a God-send to every DBZ Fan who owns a PlayStation 2, I really advice you to purchase it, you won't regret it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dragonball Z: Budokai, 3 Dec 2002
By A. J. Stravers - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'am not a great DBZ fan I was a while ago though. I played boutoudon 1,2,3 for SNES. At that time they where really great, one of the best thing is that is not all bout beating only. It involves tactics, when how do I use the energy or not use em? I really loved those games, that is why I bought Budokai, at first I was a bit dissapointed to be honnest, not about graphics or the chars that I didt not have. It was just the interface it didt not match with boutoudon at all. But once I got a bit familiar with them the game turned out to be quite good. Ok ok there are a few things I would rather have seen different. But hey no game is perfect right? One of the main area's of dissaprovel is that it is Jappanese entirely you will get Englisch subtitles tough. But I think they should have putten a little more effort then just putting subtitle.

Graphics 9/10
The graphics are great no doubt about it. The reason why I gave a 9 out of 10 is cause at some points characters move in eachother, Like when someone is grabbed by the throat the hand of the grabber dissapears. Wich makes the game loose a bit of realism.

SFX 8/10
The sounds are nice but get a little repeative.

Music 6/10
This low mark is not cause the music quality is poor, but most of it ain't the music most people would like to hear in a beat uuuuhm up guess it is too relaxing. The sound must give you a rush not calm you down in a beat em up I'd say. But some are qualified for beat em up music though.

Story 8/10
It is the actual DBZ story from Saiyan to Cell saga nothing new here. But !!! there are some alternitive outcomes based on who you play, wich is quite original. I would love to tell you them but they will count as spoilers so better you find out yourselves.

Extra options 10/10
Another nice thing about the game is that you have so much extra options like collecting skills editing your own chars to your own wishes. Wich gives the game a faint flavour of RPG making it one of the rare beat um up RPG. You also get some extra things. There are also a few mini games included in the game, but don't expect to much from them.

Control 7/10
I do not know if it is a bad thing or a good thing, but Death moves as the game calls it are not excecuted from a distance except one that is but that aint a good one. Most are like the neo meteo attacks on boutouden meaning it is like a grab attack. But that aint it too. Altough the death moves are difficult to excecute the opponent can block em with the greatest ease.

Overall 8/10 (please read the text under this line for preventing any mistakes)

I really recomend it for people who love fast beat em ups with a bit of depth with it. And for DBZ gamers I'd like to say ORDER NOW !! People who have doubts about the game and are not DBZ fans I say to rent first before buying.
