A Teddy view of Sega GT 2002, 16 Nov 2002
Sega GT 2002 is another high quality title from Sega. Although at first glance it appears to be little more than an updated and bumped up version of Sega GT for the Dreamcast it is in fact so much more. In many ways it is quickly comparable with the well renowned Gran Tourismo series on the PS2. It certainly has more in common with that title than any of the racing titles currently available for the Xbox. There are several game modes to get your teeth into:Chronicle Mode:- You get to race a number of Classic cars from the 70s such as the 1st generation Toyota Celica and the Corvette Stingray in a number of races that span the decades. As you go through you are presented with some interesting historical facts about each period and the affects that each decades laws and technology affected the cars in production. You then have to boost your car in order to face up to the increasingly more advanced opposition. To help you race your 70s car against 80s, 90s and ultimately 21st century opposition, you will be granted points to spend on your car at the end of each race to buy components to give you a much needed boost. You really get a lot of satisfaction in beating 'modern' opposition in an old classic. GT2002 Mode:- This is the Main mode of the game and you begin with a small amount of money with which to purchase a car. Your choice will be limited at first but you will quickly gain more and more cash by entering competitions and doing well in them. After a few races you are given the dilemma of what to do with your money. Save up for a new car? Tinker with the one you have by exploring the extensive tuning options available? Despite what you ultimately decide it quickly becomes more complicated as you will have to keep the car you have in working order by keeping the various parts of it well serviced and changing the tires regularly. If you fail to do so it really will make a difference to the way the car performs. Sega have done a wonderful job making the 100+ cars in the game actually feel as much like their real life counterparts as possible. With all the add on parts (bolt-on turbos, port polish, racing tires, turbines, racing suspension) and tuning options available to you - there are literally thousands of different driving experiences to be had. This mode really has no definitive end and will keep you hooked for hours trying to do that one more race to afford that part you are after - to give you that bit extra you need - to win that race with the big money - so you can get that car you have been drawling over for hours! Like Gran Tourismo, the races are divided into 'levels' based around your license level. Each license opens up a new set of increasingly tough races to you, but the tougher races have bigger prizes. Some of the more specialist Event Races have other criteria for entrance, such as a specific type, era or make of car. The prizes for these races vary too - you can even win a new car to play around in. Time Attack Mode:- This mode allows you to try to beat your best time on any track you have previously played. It comes with a number of options, such as 'ghost car', where a ghost image of your best lap will act as a guide to how well you are doing. The game is well presented with good graphics and blisteringly fast paced action. You actually feel like you are driving at 180mph! It is the little touches that really make to game, like bursting round a tight bend into a tunnel, then burst out of the other side into dazzling sunlight. The sun glare really looks good and can affect the way you drive as it would in real life. The race tracks are varied - from American style drag racing tracks to speed circuits to narrow twisting roads through what appear to be old Bavarian towns to snowy, ice covered roads at night. Although not as pretty as the likes of Project Gotham Racing or with as many cars and makes as the Gran Tourismo - the sheer playability, options and addictiveness of Sega GT 2002 makes it a winner. If only it had the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche cars available it would have been superb. On the other hand, it does give you the chance to drive those other sports cars that you don't get to drive in other games. Over all a very good 4/5.
