Amazon.co.uk Review
The original Roller Coaster Tycoon had the winning combination of fun and mainstream appeal. Ironically, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 imitates RCT. Perhaps in an effort to spoil a good thing or perhaps to guarantee success with low-system-spec mainstream fans, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 plays almost exactly like the original game. Maybe too much like it.

The graphics are still two-dimensional, and if you didn't know better you'd swear you were still looking at the first game. The ability to play the game in much higher resolution alleviates some of the disappointment with graphics: a closer look reveals greater variety in animations, more people and a smoother look overall. The audio is, again, fantastic. It's the perfect mix of screams of terror, enthusiastic giggling, grumbling, retching and carnival music and brings the scent of candy floss to your nose every time.

New structures are available as well as some new rides, but the biggest change is the addition of themes. Want a Haunted Park? They've given you the artwork you need to create one. You'll also find a Wild West theme, a children's theme and more. The scenarios are grouped more logically by difficulty and fans will be delighted with a sand box mode that allows limitless free play. RCT2 has a wide variety of new roller coaster designs, including a few famous roller coasters from around the world (mostly from Six Flags theme parks). A very welcome addition is the ability to open a separate screen where you can test-build a custom roller coaster without worrying about space or money before buying and placing it in the game. Perhaps the best new addition is the ability to raise and lower the ground en masse, which removes one of the most annoying features of the first game.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2isn't a ground-breaking sequel but it is an excellent game for fans of the series. We can wish they'd done more with the concept, brought it to 3-D or used new, higher resolution artwork, but the gameplay remains the same. And that's a thrilling ride on its own. --Andrew S Bub

4.0 out of 5 stars Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 - A welcome return?, 21 Oct 2002
RCT2 contains everything you remember in the original, it looks feels and plays the same however this time the scenarios are much harder. The play is more intelligent, the detail has been refined (to the point where even the little people look at rides that are being built!). This time round there are brand new rides, and it comes with unlike the original, many more themes, rides and shops to choose from without the need to research everything from scratch. All over its a good buy, but dont be discouraged by its familier look because underneath its a brand new game, and much more challenging to play. The options for roller coaster design is only limited to your wild imagination! Forget the Sims, this game will keep you coming back for more especially if you love to scare the pants off your park guests.

4.0 out of 5 stars addictive, 12 Feb 2003
I'm not really a gamer cos I haven't got my own computer, but I fell for this game straightaway and play it when I can. It's a bit like Theme Park, if any one remembers that. Basically, you are in control of your own theme park, or you can have many at the same time. There are different difficulty levels. I haven't looked at Advanced, but Intermediate level is more difficult than Beginner level because you have to get a very high amount of people in your park quickly. If you fail your objective, you don't get a trophy!

You can have a loan, and increase it if necessary, then stop it later. Finance is not a problem in the game and is very easy to keep on top of. Your only source of income (apart from a loan) is park/ride takings, so spend your money wisely. Money has to be spent on scenery, staff, footpaths, food stalls and the rides themselves. Footpaths - now these are necessary but are a pain in the bum at times! And levelling/sloping land is a bit fiddley and costly if short on cash. These are the only minor irritations with the game. People vomiting all the time can also be a bit annoying.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is a great game though, when you have money and it's all going smoothly. You can build a rollercoaster using a set design (of which there are many diiferent kinds) or build your own custom made one. Practice using the Roller Coaster Designer first. You can choose the music for each ride, its colour scheme, its name, and many other things. The detail on this game is very good. You can even rename the park's visitors (but that might be going a bit too far!) There's not much time to sit back and admire your handy work; there's always something do be done, and half the time you're checking the handymen are cleaning up the sick. I haven't fully explored the game, but I'm looking forward to looking at all the different scenarios. This game is so involving and addictive, it has to be 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for newbies, not so good for original tycooners., 23 April 2003
By Luke Wheeler - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 is an extremely good game. Newbies to the rollercoaster tycoon series will find this game extremely addicting and fun to play for months to come. It's features include over 50 scenarios, a scenario editor, a rollercoaster designer (this is used so you dont have to create coasters in the park with everything in the way), and a huge number of new coasters, shop and stalls.
For people who have played the original, it's a slight dissapointment. My friend and I both bought the game along with the Loopy Landscapes add-on pack and we were hooked for months. When we both purchased the second game, we were hooked for about 3 hours. It seems it's too similar to the original to serve it's full potential. So here's the word. If you have the original, unless you're a die hard fan and would do anything to play it, then buy it. If you have the original and find it fun, don't bother. If you're a newbie, this is a good place to start.
Now the gameplay itself. The biggest flaw it has. THERE IS STILL NO 'RIDE YOUR COASTER' OPTION! You have to view your ride from a 3d angle instead of a first-person view in a seat on the coaster like most other roller coaster games offer. The rest of the gameplay is great. You can change the prices of rides, buy land, loan money, build rides, place scenery from a huge huge huge huge huge choice of objects (theres like 5 different variaties of a dust bin), name the guests in your park and much much more.
The graphics are of a resonable quality and if the view you had of your park was any closer, the graphics would look horribly blocky. When a coaster is moving slow, it moves frame by frame instead of running smoothly, showing this games slow Frames Per Second (I estimate about 20 or 30).
The sound is good and you can choose music to go with your rides. What I liked was that you could move away from a ride with music, and the music gradually gets quieter instead of suddenly switching off. Shame this was the same in the original.

Overall a good game but owners of the original made not find it worth the money. For newbies to the coaster series, this is the best possible place to start.
