Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Combining the racing thrills of souped-up touring cars with the graphical look of Japanese anime movies, Capcom's Auto Modellista for the PlayStation 2 brings a new look and feel to the world of console motor racing. With the emphasis placed heavily on the arcade side of affairs, this rather odd-looking beastie relies more on looks than technical proficiency, creating a more instantly playable experience than the Gran Turismo series at the expense of the tweaky, twiddly bits that petrolheads salivate over.

The cel-shaded style of the gameplay works well for the most part, giving the game a very different feel to its peers; heavily accentuated cars give off impressive looking turbo flashes accompanied by speed lines to enhance the feeling of acceleration. But for all the good things this graphical style gives to the title, it also proves to be a little problematic. The issue here is one of visual depth--there are many occasions when the cars (and sections of the various circuits) look exactly like the frames from a printed comic--i.e., flat--and this lack of visual space and depth can lead to confusion and accidental collision at times when it's least needed.

The circuit selection is good, if relatively unknown outside of Japan, and hammering around at a rate of knots produces some interesting collisions that are far less damaging to the race order then they might be. One area where Capcom seems to have skimped is in the sound department, which comprises some nasty Japanese twangy guitar tunes and an occasional commentary voice-over that's irritating enough to have you reaching for the volume controls within minutes.

Niggles aside, there's a lot to be said for Auto Modellista. It tries very hard to fill the mid-ground between GT3 and Ridge Racer, and for the most part succeeds; if you're looking for something a little different this could be the racing game for you. --Chris Russell

4.0 out of 5 stars Racing games just got better!!!, 12 Nov 2002
For a while many games have tried to take the graphics from Gran Turismo, the playability of Burnout, and the customisation options from Tokyo Extreme Racer. The answer? Auto Modellista.

This games focuses on street racing. Pick a car from the likes of well known licensed manufacturers such as Subaru, Nissan, Honda and Toyota. Next pick a colour scheme and design, and this is where you can express yourself. Auto Modellista allows you to mix and match colours, experiment with various decals in order to make your wheels the coolest on the track. Car customisation is the key to sucess, so tuning your motor is essential. There are countless parts available to your vehicle, interior and exterior wise. Engine tune ups, extra spoilers, new tires and stylish side skirts. It's all there. Graphics are simply superb for a game of this calibre. Everything looks astounding, even the rain effects and the wind effects that represent your slipstream. Animated skid marks and water effects have never looked better, and all this is accompanied by a buzzing sound track!

However, although this all seems good, that is where it ends. The single player mode is too short, and you can complete the game in a couple of hours. Also, at the beginning of the championship mode you get to tune your motor, and anyone who has a clue about how to tune will thrash the first couple of tracks. Two player mode does increase the longevity of the game, and there are an endless amount of possibilities on how your vehicle performs and looks.

Sadly, this game was meant to have online capability functions, so you can really show your skills and show off your stylish car. However, at the moment there is no UK online PS2 capability, so no chance to test out your 900bhp Supras then!

One more mode adds to the game, the VJ theatre. This allows you to view your replays and customise them with stylish effects, in order to jazz up the appearance whilst you are watching them. You can spend hours here, designing your perfect race with a perfect appearance. Many options include special camera effects, incorporation of colour streaks and for something different, and inverted colour option.

To sum up, Auto Modellista is a great game, but lacks replayability and longevity, but this is made up by the beautiful cell shading graphics, endless amount of customisations and the chance to feel truly original.
In other words, if you loved The Fast and the Furious, you're gonna love this!

3.0 out of 5 stars Style over substance?, 1 Oct 2003
I recently bought Auto Modellista mainly because of its unique cell-shaded look and that it reminds me of the manga Initial D (very good, you MUST watch it or at least read it).

So anyway it looks good but does it play good?

Graphics 5/5
Brilliant cell-shaded graphics that do the cars justice. It almost like your playing in the pages of a comic book. This is the games biggest strongpoint.

Gameplay 3/5
The cars handling is slightly weird and takes a little time to adjust to. It not quite arcade or simulation it falls between the two. The career mode is fun and rewarding but ultimetly the game lacks difficulty. The game is still alot of fun and I would reccomend getting it. Last time I checked it was listed at £14.99 on Amazon so its certainly worth its money.

Lastability 3/5
Lots to unlock and collect however may lack the difficulty for more experienced players.

Summary/Overall 3/5
A great looking game thats alot of fun to play. Just a few minor flaws.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 22 Sep 2003

Oh dear. Auto Modellista LOOKS stunning. I'm a huge fan of cel-shading and it could have worked so well here. Unfortunately, Capcom forgot to add the whole point of gaming to this title -- fun. There's no challenge, no skill required (you don't even need the brakes to race the tracks) and no sense of driving at all. This title may be of interest to younger players who don't like the challenge of Gran Turismo titles -- if that applies to you, I'd recommend you look at Burnout 2 or Project Gotham Racing on the Xbox... at least you can powerslide in those games, which is a lot of fun!

Perhaps Auto Modellista 2 will be good -- there's a lot to build on here, but this title fails to deliver the goods. It's shame -- I remember when Capcom was a marque of guaranteed quality.
