Amazon.co.uk Review

Polished with the grit of great WWII films, Medal of Honor shines brightly, despite the graphic limitations of the PlayStation. As US secret-service officer James Patterson, you must embark on highly dangerous missions, sometimes in the trenches, sometimes undercover, but always alone and always eliminating the German Nazi threat. The Nazis are equipped with the same weapons as you, and they know how to use them. Throw a grenade and watch soldiers scatter, or better yet kick a steel pineapple back in their direction before it blows. Missions are divided into challenging--but never frustrating--levels that include infiltrating a U-boat pen, destroying a war train while disguised as a German officer, or powering through a group of nasty Gestapo in a quaint French town. A mixture of stealth fighting and action bravado, using each with prudence, is essential for successfully completing levels. This game is full of suspense, in the way that a good page-turner keeps you up at night. The briefing for every level is just too enticing to resist--don't fight it. --Jeff Young

Medal of Honor: Underground is not simply a collection of further levels--there's been some thought and careful re-working to bring new features to the game. The environment is now more interactive, so more things react to being shot at, and you also get to go on cooperative missions with other allies. The overall level of AI has been improved so the enemy is now more responsive and will react to your fire accordingly. The sound is also highly impressive; the footsteps of approaching guards seem to echo off every wall and the multilingual shouts add to a very encompassing gaming environment. The first-person view and controls are the same as those of its predecessor's, which are simple and easy to get the hang of; using the analogue stick to control the speed of your movement is noteworthy and extremely effective task to master. Overall, Medal of Honor: Underground has all the glory of its predecessor and is just as addictive. If you're a fan of first-person shooters, this is about the best that the PlayStation has to offer. --Chris Hall

Product Description

Medal Of Honor is the first game to bring gritty WWII action to the PlayStation convincingly. The date is June 5, 1944, just one day before D-Day, and the mission is to go behind enemy lines on a series of search and rescue operations, commando raids, and all-out battles. The twenty-four levels have been designed to authentically recreate real period environments, while the twelve weapon types continue the realistic feel. Using such classics as the Tommy gun and bazooka you must take on twenty different types of enemy, from the Wehrmacht light infantry to the Nazi shock troops, fighting it in some inspired locations--from a U-Boat to a V2 rocket plant. A split-screen option facilitates the two-player mode, really bringing the shoot-'em-up element to the fore. And if all that isn't enough to convince you of Medal Of Honor's pedigree, bear in mind that it comes from the Dreamworks stable, home of a certain Mr Spielberg.

Medal of Honor Underground is a prequel to Medal of Honor in which you play as Manon, a young French girl recruited by the French Resistance, fighting in the OSS against the coming German onslaught. The Nazis will use suppressive firing squad tactics, tanks, half-tracks, and motorcycles to try to stop you. The game features 22 levels spread throughout 7 missions, with 12 authentic weapons, including the pistol crossbow and the Panzerfaust. A new disguise mode allows Manon access to the Third Reich's most evil secrets. Artificial Intelligence-controlled fellow agents will assist by battling the Gestapo, cracking safes, and driving vehicles. After fighting the Nazis across Europe and North Africa, try battling your friends in Medal of Honor Underground's split-screen multiplayer arenas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Medal of Honor and Medal of Underground, 19 Sep 2002
By jack kerr (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
these two games, in my opinion are the two best first person shooters on the old playstations. Both games are incredibly real and well-detailed, and the missions are expertly put together. In the first game you are Lt. Jimmy Paterson, an American soldier, and your mission is to turn the tide of the war against the Nazis. You must make your way through 5 missions and 20 levels including destroying railguns and destroying the V2 rockets. In medal of honor underground you play as Manon - Jimmy's ally from the first game. You have to do all you can to stop the German War effort, and this game includes missions in France, North Africa and in Germany itself. These two games are incredibly well put together and the two-player mode will keep you busy for hours. The only problem is that those of us with PS2s and Computers will probably opt for the newer Frontline and Allied Assault games. Nevertheless these two are both great games and [...] are great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL the best MOH console games, 5 Sep 2005
Having played all 3 of the MOH games on the next gen consoles (PS2 & Xbox) - that's Frontline, Rising Sun and European Assault, I still believe these two games are the best in the series. Maybe it's because when they came out they were the pinnacle of FPS at the time, something the series has been unable to pull off on newer consoles. It could also be that, particularly in European Assault, there are so many glitches that proove things haven't really moved on that much. So in these games the graphics aren't as good, but the gameplay remains fantastic and the atmosphere created by the fabulous music score and sound affects really pulls you into the game.

If you're a fan of FPS, WWII games and/or the more recent MOH games I would highly recommend you regress to these older PS1 games and see how good they are. At at this price for 2 games, there's more gamaplay here than in many newer games.
