Synopsis

Shakespeare's story of ambition and greed comes to life in this special production, featuring costumes and sets designed to match those of the original Globe Theater presentations in Shakespeare's own time. This production is one of the clearest and strongest versions of the great play ever filmed.

1.0 out of 5 stars how to put your children off Shakespeare for ever, 2 May 2004
By Helen Lyons "hplyons" (uk) - See all my reviews

I bought this for my son to help him revise for his SATS. We were both very surprised by the poor quality of the picture, the amateurish over dubbing of Macbeth's part, the use of mainly American supporting roles, and the substitution of the word 'dollar' for 'guinea'. The whole thing was filmed on one hand held video camera and the editing was basic. I don't think we got further than Act 1, so can't elaborate further except to say DO NOT BUY THIS DVD. It is terrible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Acting!, 20 Jul 2007

Having read another review of this DVD I was expecting not to enjoy the production or performance of this DVD.

I must say that I was very entertained indeed, being a big fan of Jeremy's I had not seen his version of Macbeth. His acting in this is breathtaking its completely awesome nad he looks every inch Macbeth as he had the height and the statue for this carismatic character.

I must agree that having American's playing the other parts spoils the ethenticity of Shakespeare, however I think I will be in awe of this performance for some time

1.0 out of 5 stars Shoestring Shakespeare, 19 Feb 2009
By Flmfn (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
Being a Jeremy Brett-fan and a fan of the works of Shakespeare this adaptation should have made my day. Unfortunately, it didn't. After casting Mr. Brett there obviously was no money left for either decent sets or a decent cast. I couldn't understand half of what Lady Macbeth (Piper Laurie) was saying. Jeremy Brett was shouting so much that a lot of his lines were difficult to understand as well. The fact that most of the rest of the cast was American didn't help either.

Apart from the above, the picture and sound quality are atrocious (think old VHS-rip). All in all a very low budget, poor quality adaptation that even Mr. Brett couln't save.
