Veggie, the debut by Iain Ballamy's Food for premier avant-garde label Rune Grammofon is superb. The previous two Food albums on Ballamy's own Feral label (Organic and GM Food and Food) proved hugely popular; with Organic… turning up in many end-of-year best lists of those who like their modern jazz adventurous, challenging and overlapping with the innovative side of post-rock.

Ballamy's saxophone works beautifully with Arve Henriksen's electro-trumpet. Experimental often seems to be a synonym for angular, but the trumpet here is often plaintive and the overall tone lyrical. Produced and mixed by Deathprod, who keeps the few beats and found-sounds contemporary and allusive, this is an impressive feast of music that everyone should enjoy tucking into. --Mark Thwaite

Food is Thomas Strønen, Iain Ballamy, Arve Henriksen & Mats Eilesten. What makes this outing different from the other Food CDs is the production of Helge Sten (Mr Deathprod). Apparently the music was recorded as per normal live in the studio, then passed onto Deathprod to remix and edit in his own minimalistic Nordic style. In fact Miles and Teo Macero worked in the same way, recording long 'almost jams' which were edited (by Teo) together afterwards. Unlike Supersilent (which Deathprod and Henriksen are members), this music is incredibly serene. In fact you'd be well advised to listen to this somewhere with plenty of silence around you as the music is almost (apart from the first track) as quite and tranquil as I imagine a Norwegian fjord!
