Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Simon Rattle picked up his baton for the first time as Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2002. His performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony was recorded by EMI and released within a month.

The resulting disc is not just a musical souvenir of that night in the Philarmonie but also a fine new addition to the Mahler catalogue. The opening trumpet solo heralds Rattle's arrival and the beginning of a deep yet exuberant reading of the work which is thoroughly absorbing from start to finish.

Rattle, who has adored Mahler Five since he first heard it as a 10-year-old boy, describes it as "extraordinary--one of the hardest won victories in Western music". Indeed the triumphant finale leaves the listener wanting to hit the play button and go through the whole thing all over again. This is one of the most significant releases of 2002 and its follow-up cannot come soon enough. --Rebecca Agnew

5.0 out of 5 stars As it should be, 14 Oct 2002
How often do you listen to a performance that not only stops you in your tracks but is so absorbing that it commands your attention before anything else ? How often is it that such is a reaction is to a piece of music so familar that it you feel it holds no more surprises ? This is a simply sublime yet powerful, terrifying but reassuring performance. It is like hearing the piece for the first time. Music as it should be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just to clear things up, 9 Mar 2004
By A Customer
I feel I ought to point a few things out for people reading these reviews.

This is not the best performance of Mahler 5 ever - there simply isn't such a thing. People have their own ideas of how this Mahler symphony should go. If you are looking for a Berliner Philharmoniker recording, then they are on better form in Abbado's recording of 1993. If you're looking for a Rattle interpretation, then this is certainly his most polished.

About wrong notes. Yes whilst there may be a few (it is a live performance after all and not an easy piece), Rattle was using a new version of the symphony, recently edited, which has numerous small changes in it. The horn player (Stefan Dohr) is brought to the front for the 3rd movement because Mahler indicated this was to be done in a letter to the conductor Willem Mengelberg.

I don’t know what people are on about concerning the ‘sudden’ re-branding of the Berlin Philharmonic – I have recordings from a good 10 years ago of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Besides why shouldn’t they be called by their proper name?

For those intending to buy this CD, I would strongly suggest that you instead buy the DVD of this concert. This is one Mahler performance which really comes alive with the addition of visuals. You also get an interview with Rattle, not to mention the first half of the concert, which consists of Thomas Adés’s masterful Asyla. Problems with balance are not a problem on the DVD, and in fact there appear to be fewer wrong notes!

Ok, so now Sir Simon is enjoying something of a popstar's status, so you can't really slag any of his records, can you ?
And it wouldn't be fair to slag this account of Mahler's Fifth either: Rattle's work is good, sometime suggestive and, on average, absolutely respectable; yet how comes everybody seems to ignore that the "Berliner" on this live recording are FAR from impeccable ? Score in hand (but even just listening with care) you may spot dozens of mistakes some of which are really annoying; besides the recording is ridiculously bad balanced with the result that the strings, while justly keeping brasses in their own place, tend to smother entire phrases of the woodwinds (no Rattle's fault, mind you!): that's why in the end, while certainly not a bad live performance, I wouldn't suggest this one as a first (or even second) choice to build, say, a Mahler's CD library.
