4.0 out of 5 stars SADLY INCOMPLETE..., 21 Nov 2008
By M. STACE "Lescaut_47" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This recording has everything a movie score fan like me could wish for. Well...nearly everything. The performance is superbly conducted and beautifully played, the recording is lush, the tempi are almost perfect. But - and this is a huge BUT - an important piece of scoring has been completely ignored. The cd booklet cover shows the reptilian Mrs. Danvers urging the traumatised second Mrs. de Winter to throw herself from the window of Rebecca's bedroom. Yet not a single note from that pivotal scene has been included. In fact, none of the music from the Manderley Ball, and the scene where the hapless heroine descends (and seconds later ascends) the staircase in her Lady Caroline de Winter fancy dress costume has been recorded. What a shame. And surprising too, when considering the attention to detail on Joel McNeely's other excellent film score recordings. I would highly recommend this sumptuously gorgeous recording, but as an addition to a more complete version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Opulent, 4 Mar 2003
This review is from: Rebecca (Audio CD)
Only the absence of some tracks already recorded in another version of Rebecca prevent me from giving this a perfect review. When a recording sounds this good you feel as if you are missing something worth having when it is not there. Having said that the quality of performance and sound is superb throughout. From the main title onwards details of orchestration reveal themselves to be far more colourful than in previous recordings. Some purists may argue that the lush and opulent recording does not sound exactly as the acoustics in the original film. For that let us be thankful as the original soundtrack seems of poor quality when watching the film and a number of cues are virtually inaudible. The recording does sound authentic despite the so-called dreaded concert hall acoustic. Here every detail is captured perfectly and despite the thick orchestration the details are not lost in a soup of reverberation. Waxman can be revealed as the composer he was, free from the constraints of the poor technology of his time. Thank you to Joel McNeely and my home town orchestra for giving this score the quality it deserves. Now, if only another 10 minutes could have been recorded...!
