4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best drving games available!, 14 Nov 2002
By A. WHITE "TechFreak" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The graphics are amazing, the gameplay fantastic. This is the best PC drving game available to date. You have 3 different game modes that give you lots of playability (play against cops, normal racing or championship modes). In hot pursuit mode the police are intelligent and can really wind you up! Especially when they are creating roadblocks and putting tyre spikes in the road. You even have helicopters dropping things in your way which all adds to making the game pretty challenging in places and it can take several attempts to progress to the next stage. You don't want to finish it in two days do you.

It does not have the simulation driving style like nfs5:porche unleashed but only the hardcore fans will notice the difference.

This game includes some amazing exotic cars from Ferraris to Porche's to more common cars such as the Vauxhall VX220 and Lotus Elise. You even have cars from different countries such as the Australian Ford TS50 muscle car and American Mustang which are awesome beasts. But you don't get all the cars at once you have to build up points to release them.

The courses are fantastic- filled with windy roads going over lava rivers to underground tunnels and shortcuts galore. Unfortunately the cops know the roads better than you which keeps you on your toes.

One downside is that the PC version was developed by a different company to the main version for the Playstation 2. So it is missing a few features that you will see on the Playstation 2 version. This is also the case with the Xbox and gamecube version because they are the same as the PC version.

Having said that this game is still great and coupled with a steering wheel it feels like you are sitting in an arcade pumping money into an arcade machine. It's that good!

warning: I have heard that the game is compatible with ALL modern video cards except the Radeon 9700 card so it pays to find out if this game supports your card before buying it. Some people have managed to get the game to work by using up to date drivers but on the box the game does not support this card. By the time you read this, it may have been fixed see the forum boards.ea.com for help on this and other probs. Have fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, exotic and butiful!, 5 Nov 2002
By A. McIntyre (Shrewsbury, Shropshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is the 6th game in a long running series that started back in 1995. The basic idea still remains fresh and similar to the originals. But over the years the game play modes, visuals and physics effects have been evolving to create something brand new and exiting to play every time.
As before, you drive some of the most exotic cars on the planet, racing around city streets, country roads and dust tracks to win, or simply avoid the police at any costs. Or be the police and take out as many speeding racers as possible.
The graphics are out of this world, much better than some recent titles that boasted good graphics like Gran Turismo 3 on the Playstation and Gotham Racing on the X-Box. Car handling is near perfect. Car selection could do with some improvement but still a good mix of international names such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Dodge and Porsche.
This game is worth the money, possibly more. It’s available on the PS2, X-Box and Game Cube but it just does not compare to a PC.
There is a demo available at the EA web site, so go try it and buy this game!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag, 12 Jan 2003
By Mr. Raphael Edwards "Raph" (Chester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The last version of Need for Speed was a cracking game, this one is OK. The graphics are lovely although a bit jerky at times on my PIII 1GHZ, the main problem is the lack of track variety. There are only four course environments with three or four tracks based in each, the problem is that most of the tracks are repeated in each other. The old 'barriers blocking a route' routine. Although there are mirrored and reversed versions of each track they do become a bit repetative and uninspiring. The two game modes are Challenge and Hot pursuit, the Challenge mode is basically racing against other cars and ultimately fairly dull as other drivers usually fail to keep up. The Hot pursuit mode involves police giving chase but again after the repetative routines and poor AI have been discovered it leaves a fairly stale game. Finally the variety of cars is good and even drving the Mclaren F1 is controlable at top speed, unlike some games that have you bashing around the track. All in all on OK game but only OK.
