Too many years ago I bought several Supraphon recordings of Janacek's music on LP - in old money they cost 17/6d, I seem to recall. Karel Ancerl and the Czech Philharmonic inspired. I wanted to find more of this marvellous music played by his countrymen and conducted by Ancerl. I got the Glagolitic Mass - in Stereo - SUA 50519. I still have the record. The cover declares the award of the the Grand Prix Academie Charles Cros Paris 1964 to the disc. How rightly this recording and performance deserved recognition. Time does not wear well on vinyl. By now my LP had gained extra background noise, a constant hiss. Now imagine my joy on reading the BBC Music Magazine of January 2003 (p.78) to see that Supraphon is now reissuing a projected 40 disc retropective of Ancerl's recordings. They've been difficult to track down - but so well worth it. The transfer of the Mass to CD is nothing less than extraordinary. I'm now trying to track down other releases in this series. I'd recommend anyone to dip into this collection of recordings - largely from the mid 60s - which show-case some less well known works and the brilliance of the CPO under Ancerl
