These EMI Classics box sets are a constant gamble. Sometimes, as in the complete late 60s Daniel Barenboim recordings of the Beethoven piano sonatas, they're a stunning bargain - a job-lot of brilliant recordings on sale at a ridiculously low price. Elsewhere, they're like this: some wonderful stuff bundled together with some profound mediocrity.

The two Piano Concertos, included herein with stand-out performances by Stephen Kovacevich, are superb. Likewise, such works as the Haydn Variations and the Academic Festival Overture are played with immense gusto. The puzzling thing is that Sawallisch entirely loses his touch when it comes to the symphonies.

Brahms only wrote four symphonies, and I suspect that they aren't regarded as being the least musician-proof works in the repertoire. With a less than inspired conductor and orchestra, they can come across as 'thoughtful', 'meditative' or just plain boring. The latter is the case here. Sawallisch conducts as though Brahms really were the ploddingly academic composer that early 20th century musical criticism once believed him to be.

When I first discovered these works, it was via the late 70s Karajan/Berliner Philharmoniker recordings. The late Karajan may have been guilty of many mannerisms, but he succeeded in kicking these huge, complex, brooding pieces of music into surging life. Sawallisch merely goes through the motions. I'd avoid this set, unless you have to listen to all of Brahms' orchestral works right now, and you're very poor. But this is not the best way to fall in love with Brahms.
