French composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel are often spoken of as contemporaries, sometimes friends other times rivals, but always regarded as great influences during the late Romantic and French Impressionist periods.

Debussy's influences ranged from the eccentric French pianist/composer Erik Satie to the Impressionist painters of the period. The younger Ravel was influenced by Debussy's style, although it seems strange that he appeared to dislike comparisons of his early works to the older composer's, yet orchestrated some of his later works. Ravel's Spanish mother also provided him with an interest in music from the region and he allowed elements of Spanish folk and baroque keyboard music into his compositions, an obvious example being his much played `Bolero'.

This EMI Classics 8CD box set shares the credits equally between Debussy and Ravel with 4CDs dedicated to each composer. The recordings were all made between 1973 and 1974 and performed by the Orchestre National de l'ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion Television Francaise) and the Orchestre de Paris. French conductor Jean Martinon (1910 - 1976) directs all the works and Frenchman Aldo Ciccolini provides the piano on these recordings, thus ensuring the French theme is retained throughout.

EMI Classics does its usual good quality presentation, with each CD supplied in a card sleeve and the slimline (1 cm thick) space efficient box providing a 52 page booklet (English and French) containing an interesting and informative study (by James Harding) of the works of each composer. Full track details and good photographs of Martinon and Ciccolini complete an excellent package.

This set complements perfectly the other EMI Classics box entitled `Debussy, Ravel Piano Works' a 6CD set concentrating on the piano works by the two composers.
