Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Giants generally come in two varieties: there are human-hating Godzilla types and saccharine-heavy friendly ones--Doshin the Giant lets you experience both.

The game puts you in control of the eponymous giant, and you're given the power to raise or lower land to please the local island population. There's not much in the way of goals or structure; you just wander round doing what you want most of the time, which is fun in a mellow kind of way but as you might imagine isn't going to be for everyone. No matter how mellow you make yourself, though, there's going to be a point in the game where you think, "humans be damned!" and start stomping on them and smashing up their houses. Do this too much and, not unreasonably, they'll start to hate you and you'll metamorphose from a nice happy yellow giant to an evil red angry one.

Doshin the Giant won't be for everyone--it's probably destined to be loved and loathed in equal measure--but it's a fun glimpse at the sort of left-of-centre weirdness that Japanese gamers take for granted. --David Jenkins

4.0 out of 5 stars The most Japanese thing ever to be let loose on Europe..., 11 Dec 2003
Weird. Very, very weird. You wonder why fantastic RPG's are never released in Europe, yet Doshin The Giant, a game where you play a yellow giant who has to help out tiny villagers, is released over here... But lets not give this game a bad name. As I said, Doshin is a yellow giant who must help an island thrive with life and beuty. But Doshin can go bad. With one tap of a button you have the power to fly and chuck huge balls of flame onto the innocent islanders.

Doshin The Giant is very, very different. But different, to some people, in not always good. Although fantastically immersing for the first week or so, if you don't stick with it, it soon starts to become a little tiresome and the aim of the game (yes, you do have an aim) becomes a little pointless. What also dosn't help, is the fact that the game really isn't very polished. There's not much sound happening, and the loading times are abismal.

But lets try to keep on the positive side. This game is charming, and I really mean charming. Although you can become the evil giant it's a lot more rewarding helping the villagers and seeing them love you back. Doshin can also raise and lower ground which a very fun implement, if not a little rough. The game also merits some nice little touches such as the way it's so easy to turn evil and, once evil, how Doshin can do a lot more, just like in life.

This game is a rough gem. Try to ignore the nasty loading times and not so brilliant sounds and graphics and you'll find a brilliantly pure game. It may not be to some peoples taste, but if you want to try somthing new you can't get much better than this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun of a gigantic nature!, 5 Oct 2002
After years of playing hundreds of in-your-face, non-stop action videogames, it's nice to have a game where you can just sit back and do things at your own pace.

Doshin the Giant sees you playing as an enormous yellow giant, whose job is to take care of the inhabitants of a remote, tropical island. You'll grow in size - getting bigger and bigger - the more you help people, or alternatively, you could grow in size by being a malicious little beggar and making everyone's lives a misery.

Those of you who love to play a game where you're always up against some new and seemingly impossible challenge won't really enjoy this game... but if you're after a game that offers pedestrian gameplay where you're given the freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want to, then Doshin the Giant is for you. Plus the chance to innocently pick up a house and then chuck it in the sea is just too good to pass up, believe me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Turning japanese, 21 Mar 2004
Quirkily cool title that puts you in charge of a giant man who must help little villagers. This game is brilliant for relieving stress or just as a break from other average concept games. The only flaw of this game is that it may be too japanesey for some however everyone i know thoroughly enjoys the game. 4 Stars!!! Tippity top.
