Imagine being accused of being someone else - someone dangerous, potentially lethal, yet resembling you in every way. You are, as far as you’re concerned, still you. How do you convince your accusers that you are you and not some evil, alien clone? Confused? Like all Philip K Dick concepts, the concept is surprisingly straightforward, completely original and always gripping. Transforming his short stories into feature films, however, takes a concerted effort not to over-complicate things and lose sight of Dick's original sentiments.
Happily 'The Impostor' does a fantastic job - it's good quality, relatively conventional sci-fi, for both the beginner and the connoisseur. Those familiar with Dick's original story will be pleased with how faithful the adaptation is, although there are one or two extra twists to keep up the surprise factor. Gary Sinise plays arms scientist Spencer Olham with a suitable mixture of bewilderment, innocence and gritty determination. Mekhi Phifer, now famous as Eminem's mentor in '8 Mile', is also excellent here as an underground fugitive aiding and abetting Olham in his escape from his would-be captors.
Fans of Minority Report (also based on a story by Dick) may notice some remarkable similarities between these two films - especially in the portrayal of a world in which everyone is monitored and tracked, and the accusation, capture and subsequent escape of the lead character. Although the obviously smaller budget of The Impostor means that it could be regarded as a poor cousin of Minority Report (especially as its special effects are OK but not world-beating), if anything its no-nonsense approach to Dick's story and its attention to detail makes it a much more satisfying affair.

Firstly, let's make it clear that the only reason this DVD doesn't get 5 stars is because of the lack of features. The film itself is worth at least 6 stars!
Impostor has all you could want. Sci-fi in a well thought out, believable, rather dark future (is it justifiable to torture 10 innocent people to death in the process of saving 10,000 lives?). Action scenes which you actually care about rather than twiddling your thumbs while admiring the SFX. I won't spoil anything, but the whole point of this film is that it keeps you guessing until the end. Even better, it doesn't spoil it with a cheesy ending or predictable final twist.

Earth has ventured into space and has riled the Centurions into attacking our planet because traveling four light years is a cake walk for them. Our cities have become impenetrable domes with evil aliens lurking outside.

Spencer (Gary Sinise) is a major league scientist who is accused of being a Manchurian Candidate, an alien cyborg who really thinks he is Spencer, but isn't. Spencer manages to escape the clutches of his captors before they dissect him, and attempts to locate his wife (Madeleine Stowe) and supposedly dead body.

The film was fair. It has a twist which I figured out about the time Spencer was accused. The production could have used some dialog and colorful characters.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. opening sex? No nudity.

Do yourself a favour and skip over Cakeboy's unhelpful review below.
He gives away the ending and spoils a big piece of the fun of the movie.
IMPOSTOR is a thoughtful piece of entertainment based on a superior Philip K Dick story.
If you like it I can recommend you also read SECOND VARIETY. But I also recommend that you avoid SCREAMERS, the dire movie that it was made into.

A somewhat underrated picture based on a story by sci-fi giant Philp K. Dick. The cast are generally excellent. The main plot is intelligent and thought provoking but the film loses the plot a little in places when it tries too hard to be an action movie.

I saw this (the original) when I was very young. The plot is very similar thus, unspoiled. Whilst the ending is slightly changed (the immortal line "Then I must be the Androi..."is gone) it still works as a "good" ending.

Good little story this. Acting OK, twist at the end was not too predictable and whilst there are a few pot holes they aren't glaring enough to spoil it.
A fine example of competent mid-budget sci fi.
