5.0 out of 5 stars The Great British Film Orchestra from Cinema's Golden Age!, 13 Nov 2007
By P. J. Wallace "Peter Wallace" (East Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Louis Levy's name will be well-known to any serious student of British film music as he was a pioneer in the field. His name appears in the credits of countless films from the 1930s to the 1950s as musical director, including many starring Jessie Matthews, Jack Hulbert and Will Hay. His film work includes Hitchcock's 1935 classic version of "The Thirty-Nine Steps", "Oh Mr Porter", and "Pygmalion" - to name but a few.

Louis began his first BBC radio series of "Music From The Movies" in 1936, and it became a great favourite with listeners. He recorded dozens of film selections for Columbia and HMV, seven of which are included in this collection of his records made between 1936 and 1940. Videos and DVDs were not an option for film fans in those far off days, but they could opt to buy and take home recordings of music from their favourite films. Louis Levy provided them with a quality product. You will note that the selections chosen for this release feature music from big Hollywood musicals of the time. In addition there are two Music From The Movies medleys of numbers from various popular film musicals, including great British ones.

The CD opens with Levy's composition "Music From The Movies" which he used as his signature tune. It also opens and closes the two medleys.

This was a big symphonic orchestra (full string section too) which had a distinctive style, largely due to the wonderfully grand arrangements of Peter Yorke. "Jingle of The Jungle", a forgotten number from an Anna Neagle film, fairly swings along with tom toms and all, and is beautifully sung by Janet Lind. There are some other tracks which also maintain a dance tempo in the manner of a large-scale dance band like "There's That Look In Your Eyes Again" and "Everybody Dance". Other singers featured here include Edward Molloy, Eve Becke, Gerry Fitzgerald, Hazel Dean, Robert Ashley, Sam Browne, George Melachrino and Evelyn Dove. These are all very fine recordings recalling a golden age of the cinema - one which is still revered by film connoisseurs - and a vintage age of radio when listeners were treated to wonderful orchestras such as this.

There are excellent liner notes and full details of each track, and the remastering has been well done.
