Amazon.co.uk Review
For even the mildest fans, anything related to this beloved book deserves top-notch treatment; Vivendi's officially-authorised The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings falls disappointingly short of that goal. The game is intriguing enough (credit the source material) to play through entirely--once. For the cost of the game, you are guaranteed a reasonably pleasurable 10 hours of gameplay. After that, it will likely sit on your shelf.

There are good things in this game: the RPG mechanics are fine (at various points in the story, you play as Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf), the visuals are beautiful in parts, and certain aspects of game design are fantastic (Gandalf's magic-casting stands out). Little touches make it appealing to true fans, for instance when Aragorn receives the repaired Sword of Elendil and it glows during fighting. It would be a great game for even non-LOTR fans to play, since a good deal of backstory is provided in lengthy cinematics throughout the game. Fellowship's greatest asset, of course, is the story itself, as well as the bevy of villainous creatures that provide great boss-fight material. Many other games probably wished they had a Balrog to offer.

But the story deviates strangely from the book in order to satisfy the format of an RPG game. The final boss-fight (which we won't spoil here) is completely unrelated to anything devised by JRR Tolkien, and it seems hollow, strange and unsatisfying. The puzzles sprinkled throughout the game are random and often frustrating, as is your first encounter with the Ringwraiths (inevitably, you die many times--too steep a difficulty curve right out of the gate). This game is still strongly recommended, but with many caveats. Proceed with caution, and you're likely to enjoy yourself. Expect a masterpiece, and you'll be wishing you'd saved your money for a different title. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Product Description
The Fellowship of the Ring is a single-player action-adventure game featuring Frodo, Gandalf and Aragorn. It's based on the first part of JRR Tolkien's epic novel The Lord of the Rings. From the peaceful lands of the Shire through the darkness of Moria, to the River Anduin, the player must gather the Fellowship and protect the One Ring from the Dark Lord Sauron.

1.0 out of 5 stars The One Ring, indeed, 23 Nov 2002
A great pity that Vivendi have simply used the title to cash in on the heightened interest in the consistently high-profile and highly-lucrative merchandising of products based around the works of Tolkien. In only one area does the game not thoroughly disappoint, and that is the graphics, which are consistently good, and in places breathtaking. This is, quite simply, a beautiful game to behold, and the visual imagery manages to capture the feeling, in as much as a game could on currently widespread technology, that you are actually travelling through Middle Earth.
Unfortunately, beneath the sexy makeup lies an ugly game indeed. All of the elements that make a game playable and special seem not so much to have been overlooked, but rather to have been intentionally discarded so efficient is their absence. Almost as though Vivendi had used the concept of the one ring itself - by crafting a beautiful thing that makes the wearer of the graphics invisible, and as it is worn it has sucked any purity and goodness of entertainment away.
For beneath the enchanting veneer, lurks a game as shallow as a hobbit's bathtub, and has the charisma of a lowly troll. There is no freedom to explore the inviting realm of middle earth, instead one must simply follow the path that Vivendi have set for Frodo. The "puzzles" are too facile and fake to be recognised as such, and the "action" is either of the most basic nature, or just annoying trial-and-error affairs rather than tests of skill.
The quests are limited, insulting to the intellect of not only Tolkien, but the player as well, and far too repetitive - Frodo searching for his lost fellow hobbits occur twice within a handful of missions at one stage in the game.
The camera angle also is a letdown - in general movement it is acceptable, but not ideal, and in many instances - especially the sequences in Moria - it makes it impossible to see where you are and what you are fighting - melee at times becomes a matter of pressing your fight button whilst looking at the ceiling or a rock face. No matter though - the combat is so devoid of skill that this approach works perfectly to survive most battles.
The game is also far too short and simple to complete. I am not the most skilled of gamers when it comes to this genre, but I completed the game within five hours, and this after a few restarts to see if I had missed anything. Once completed, there is no desire to replay, and no incentive. The game boasts the ability to play Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf, but switches between the characters, not even giving the option of playing from start to finish from different perspectives and with varying styles.
Not that there is much to each character. Frodo is a poor fighter, but can sneak and use the ring, Aragorn fights well with a sword, but his bow is next to useless, and Gandalf's arsenal of magic is restricted to five spells - three offensive and two defensive. Far from impressive.
The thing that summed up the failure of the game most for me, however, was that when watching my partner play parts of the game was as entertaining as playing it yourself. Once you have seen one area, there is no real desire to return, be it if you actively playing, or in sight of it being played.
It is sad to see that Vivendi have abused the rights that they bought for the game. Instead of using the licence as an opportunity to make money as well as creating what had the potential to be an incredible realisation of Tolkien's myth and a tribute to his fantasy, they have utilised it on the most basic level, as a licence to make money on no justification but for the association with the greatest mythos of modern times, on the back of the profit machine that has rolled along with the success of the film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice game, 10 Nov 2002
By A Customer
My first piece of advice if you're thinking about purchasing this game is don't buy it expecting a completely faithful reproduction of the book. Yes, it's closer to the book than the film was but certain aspects of the storyline has been sacrificed for gameplay. Not that this is always a bad thing, in many parts of the game it shows itself to be puzzling and enjoyable, however some tasks and puzzles seems to have been added simply to extend certain areas of the game (such as in hobbiton, one of your missions is to find a metal pin for the mill, which is annoying and pointless) or are just too difficult (escaping the ringwraith in hobbiton is a good example). Other parts of the story have been missed out altogether (before reaching moria you just get a screen telling you the fellowship attempted the mountain, but turned back), and the fighting skills of hobbits has greatly improved since I read the book (after leaving the shire I beat three wolves, double my size, to death simultaniously with my walking stick), in fact, while playing as Aragorn I managed to kill off two trolls by simply running away and letting the hobbits deal with them for me.

However if you can forgive these few things and put the game into context (it's really one third of the finished game, if you really think about it) you are in for some areas of immense fun, fighting Tolkien's bad guys as Aragorn or Gandalf is something anyone, even idle film-goes, will enjoy and the game looks absolutely stunning in some places. A good example of this is the FMV sequences, while some seem a little short, they are beautifully rendered and the scene where Frodo crosses the river into Rivendell is truly amazing.

Forgive the few inconsistencies and little annoyances and this is a lot of fun, nothing revolutionary but its a good distraction for work or school. However don't buy it expecting a work as good as Tolkien, or you'll be severly dissapointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad in the real world, 30 Dec 2002
By Richard White "withnail101" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had high hopes for this game and looked forward to it for some time. The conclusion I have come to is that the game is both good and bad!
For somebody with little time on their hands its actually rather good. Games in recent years require the ‘victim’ to spend weeks (not merely hours) of their life managing situations, ruling cyber cities and making cyber laws in order to complete the task.
That’s fine for people who spend more time in an armchair than breathing but for ordinary folk with a life it’s a problem. The reason it’s a problem is that we simply don’t have the time to commit to such a gargantuan task. That’s why I quite liked Fellowship. Thats why I didnt care that it strays from the book in the same way that a Childrens nativity play does from the bible and there isn’t much to do in the way of interaction and the skills in the fighting arena consist entirely of clicking the left mouse button. I personally didn’t care because I moved through the game with my interest mainly intact largely due to the lovely graphics and having actually being able to finish a game without leaving work for 18 months.
I know that for the serious gamer or Tolkeinite it has serious flaws and I can accept that, but for those who want a game rather than a new life its really not that bad.
