Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the unexpected trends in the yoga mania that is sweeping the country is the demand--and popularity--of yoga for kids. Established expert and popular yoga instructor Barbara Currie's Fun Yoga for Kids isn't just capitalising on the interest, but instead offers a genuine, sound introduction aimed at children--and that includes the kid in everyone.

While the set, graphics, animation and format are all kid-friendly, the key to this programme's success is that Currie resists turning it into a pantomime. With precise and concise instructions she takes the kids straight into saluting Sammy the Sun, a core yoga sequence. The difference between this and adult yoga is that the holds in positions are not as long. With Colin the Cobra's Forest of Secrets as the setting, the 50-minute session flies through about a posture every two minutes. The postures are renamed after animals such as Willy the Warrior Warthog (warrior position), Tallulah the Toucan (triangle position), Billy the Bear and Freddie the Flamingo (balancing positions), Geri the Giraffe (twist).

By featuring real kids rather than perfect models or trained actors, the responses are endearingly imperfect, spontaneous, and genuine. All in all it's a fantastic introduction for parents and kids, with no chance of anyone getting bored.

On the DVD: Fun Yoga for Kids on disc offers each posture itemised scene by scene making it simple to choose favourites, repeat, or adapt for shorter sessions. --Lorna V

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to introduce children to yoga!, 14 April 2003
By Jacquie O'neill "Oneillustrator" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been looking for a way to introduce my children to yoga - they are very interested in my practice, but I was unsure what was safe for them to try.

This DVD is fantastic - Helped by "Colin the Cobra" Barbra Currie teaches the children how to do 22 asanas(poses) each one is named after an animal, making it easy for the children to remember. The video is engaging enough to keep the children interested, without being to 'hyper' which would go against the Yoga ethos.

Included in the DVD is a wall chart for your children to tick off as they become familiar with each pose, and a sheet of stickers of the animals.

Altogether a very cost effective way to introduce your children to a practice that will enhance the rest of their lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good, 2 Feb 2006
By A Customer
My three children, now aged 12, 9 and 8, have been using this yoga dvd for about two years now, and they all like it. It is great because yoga is explained in a friendly way, and the animal names help the children to remember the poses. My only gripe is that the dvd isnt very "cool", so I dont know how much longer my lot will enjoy it. However, it has certainly got them all into yoga, hopefully for life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear what a pitty never mind, 2 Dec 2005
This is really just an adult yoga video with some a children's cartoon veneer over the top. Our kids just wandered off and did something more constructive. Barbara Currie rattles through a series of assanas in a most un-yogic fashion. Each one is introduced by a little cartoon and has a 'child friendly name' but once she starts her description of the pose it is as if she were talking to a load of adults. How many 7 year olds do you know who can reliably tell their left foot from their right? Many adults can't do it! Children are by nature creative and imaginative but this certainly isn't going to bring that out of them.

Note that Barabara Curry doesn't even lower herself to making the animal noises. You get the feeling she really doesn't want to be there. (Dirty little brats)

If you take it just as yoga instruction even then it isn't very good. Every thing is rattled through very fast, single camera angle and there is no detailed explanation of the poses. It is important in warrior pose, for example, for the front knee not to go over the foot but for the shin to remain vertical or risk damage to the knee. When will we have a video that explains this kind of thing instead of these gung ho throw your arms in the air then flop videos.
