Amazon.co.uk Review

The Baldur's Gate series redefined and reinvigorated the PC role-playing scene, and now Interplay brings it to the Xbox. Don't be fooled, however. This isn't a traditional role-playing game but rather a fun, wall-to-wall action hack 'n' slash adventure in the mould carved by Gauntlet and Diablo. It nonetheless conforms to the Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition rule set.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance casts you as one of three basic characters: an elf sorceress, a human archer or a dwarf fighter. You're set free inside a huge Dungeons & Dragons world replete with dungeons, forests, ice caves and much more. Naturally, it's all filled to the brim with horrible monsters, wicked traps, treasures and fabled magic weapons. As you go, you're constantly rewarded with new weaponry, new monsters to fight and experience points you can put into your character stats to grow even more powerful. You can swap equipment in an inventory "paper doll" screen and those changes will be reflected in your onscreen character: you'll start with simple weapons and a drab appearance and you'll end up a big, mean superhero.

The graphics are simply wonderful and the controls are accurate, responsive and fun to use--which is necessary for the constant hacking and slashing required. The game is all the more fun when you recruit a buddy and play the game in cooperative mode. --Bob Andrews

4.0 out of 5 stars Short & Sweet, 21 April 2003
By A Customer
I completed this game within 3 days, there are lots of enemies, weapons, you can import players from previous games and continue to redo the game in hard level, after you have finished on any level you can get to run the gauntlet and I thought the fact that you could play 2 player brill but my only complaint is that it is too SHORT with only 3 chapters, and only 3 characters to choose from, Dwarf (fighter), Human (archer) and Elven (scorceress). It is great bad for 2 players (as there is nothing else out there for 2 players) but just wasn't long enough for me. Save your money and go for Morrowind as I am still playing that and I got it for Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good - but don't be fooled, 20 May 2003
I like the other reviewers had great expectations for this title. Having played, enjoyed and been immersed in the world of Baldurs Gate on the PC I was all set to don my (virtual) armour, pick up my controller and set out once again to venture on the Sword Coast.

But I didn't get what I expected. For a start instead of the in depth character creation of the PC game I was presented with a stark choice of three characters with no chance to mould them into a virtual personality at all.

No matter I thought, picked the first that came to the A button before merrily setting off to look for the detailed plot that governs the PC versions of this game.

I'm an experienced RPG explorer and adventurer but I couldn't find it. Instead I discovered that this was really another Guantlet/Diablo. Admittedly what it did it did very well, the magic was fun and devastating (and you didn't have to sleep for eight hours between spells), the animation very fine (the water ripple effects glorious) and with more enemies than even Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings CGI could muster, there was plenty of hacking and slashing to be done. Initial disappointment soon waned and was replaced with the sort of chronic finger ache you only get from desperately hitting action buttons too often and too hard.

In all a fun, good looking title but not the D+D or PC Baldur's Gate experience that you would expect from a game bearing that name.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baldurs Gate (xbox), 27 April 2003
If you like killing monsters, collecting treasure and gaining levels then this is the game for you. Solo or with a friend the game if a fantastic journey of constant action. The plot is fairly lite, but interesting.

The gameplay is extremely addictive, with a friend even more so. If you've played diablo I or II the game play is similar. In fact if Baldurs gate had had "random" levels the game would have had even greater replay value, as its possible to develop each character in a very differnt ways.

The graphics are nice, and have a "cartoony" style that oldshool games used to have. Water effects and shiny surfaces are well done. The sound effects are good, and the music feels right.

Baldurs Gate for the Xbox is a RPG thats all about action and getting that next piece of equipment.
