Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
You might be forgiven for thinking that Quantum Redshift is a 1970s science fiction film, but it's actually the latest futuristic driving game from Microsoft. If you remember the classic PlayStation title Wipeout then this is a similar concept: you race a load of high-powered vehicles round a track picking up power-ups and trying to run every other participant off the road. If you win you simply go on to the next level.

Like SSX Tricky, in Quantum Redshift you pick a racer rather than a vehicle and each one has their own background. Initially there are eight to choose from with the option to unlock more the further you progress into the game. Each character has their own ship, choice of weapons and their nemesis who will try their hardest to run them off the track.

There are several modes to choose from: tournament is organised into a series of four leagues, from novice through to Redshift. There is also a head-to-head multiplayer mode, with a maximum of four players in split-screen. Graphically the game looks great with the water effects in the wet races really showing off the Xbox's superior pixel pushing power.

The controls are very pick up and play, and although the game is fast paced, it's not so hard as to be frustrating. And then there are the weapons. When you win you are awarded points depending on how you performed; the time taken to complete the track, the damage you cause and your overall style all combine to result in your overall score. You use money to upgrade your weapons and ship, usually consisting of such weapons of mass destruction as guided missiles and projectiles. You can recharge these by picking up orbs on the track. All in all Quantum Redshift is a very playable game with some great touches and more than enough adrenalin fuelled action to keep even the most demanding speed freaks happy. --Linden Thomas

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, 20 Sep 2005

I bought this for the youngster but paid under a tenner when it was on offer on Amazon earlier this year and it is Pretty good.

It isn't exactly the best but it isn't the worst either - it's simple enough and worth buying. Well, certainly worth the tenner but I can't say whether I would have paid much more for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed gem, 10 Oct 2002
QR is a flawed gem. It's great fun, but frustrating in equal measure.

The graphics are fantastic (the only criticism is a bit of clipping when your car/ship goes in the water. The replay also looks a bit naff). On the plus side, the rain effects are lovely and the sense of speed is also well realised. Additionally the picturesque scenery on some of the stages looks great.

It's also a good racer - especially on the later levels where the speed starts to pick up (it's a bit slow and easy on the earlier levels). But it's on the later levels that the problems begin - not least because you actually have to win the race to progress.

You'll find yourself out in front - the racing isn't that difficult and getting to the front is relatively easy - when the unjustness comes into play. Once in the lead you'll find yourself the target of a barrage of attacks. They're relentless. What's more there's nothing you can do about it. You'll spend most of your time looking for shield power-ups so you aren't destroyed. Not that it matters, becuase you can fend off four attacks and then be hit be the fifth. This gives the whole race a bit of a lottery feel to it. I guess this is always an issue when you put weapons in racing games, but it could have been handled so much better. Mario Kart and Wipeout 2097 got it right - this doesn't quite!

It's so infuriating when you've struggled to get in front, and you're about to win, when BOOM, you're out without warning and not because you made a mistake! What's more, getting hit stops you in your tracks while everyone else zips by while conversley, your attacks on the other racers seem to have little effect.

Having said that though, I think you'll like it. It has that 'just one more go' about it. And despite the frustrations I found myself perservering just to try and win the damn races.

If you've not bought it yet, I recommend trying it first. If you're a hardcore race fan, you'll love it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quantum Redshift, 9 Sep 2006
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game fior a few quid I had spare, as I've been searching for a futuristic racer for Xbox for some time, to replace Wipeout. But this game just doesn't cut it. It's a mediocre game, it really is. The tracks are a little repetitive, and not as ingenius as wipeouts. Weapons are too limited. You have a homing weapon, a non-homing weapon, a shield, and if you upgrade your ship enough you get a super-weapon. There is no diversity in the weapons available, and it's too hard to get a kill using standard weapons, while super-weapons tend to be overkill, and take a long time to get.

Now onto the most important part. In a futuristic racer, you look for speed right? Yes, this game has that, your speedometer goes up above 700 in redshift mode. However, there is no feeling of speed. Other futuristic racers, like Wipeout, Rollcage 1 and 2 way back for the PS1, and extreme G are fast enough to blow you away, but this doesn't give that feeling.

There is also no aerodynamic element in the ships, they are fat, CG-d looking things, and they are too smooth, they actually look like a computer generated image, not a racebred machine. When you look at the ships in wipeout and other futuristic racers, they even look fast while sitting still. These things do not. They look stupid, like a childs toy.

I searched for one good futuristic racer on Xbox, first I found Powerdrome, then I found this. I'm still looking.
