Taneyev was a master of counterpoint and the author of an enormous treatise on the subject. Consequently, the popular opinion has been that his music is dry and unapproachable. These two symphonies belie that view. Taneyev's technical mastery is always evident, of course, but his thematic material is attractive and memorable. Indeed, Taneyev sometimes makes a point of tugging the heart strings as, for example, in the glorious lyrical outpouring at the end of the first movement of the Second Symphony. After this movement there is a tuneful Andante (David Nice, in his note for this disc is ungenerous in calling its "melodic substance...hardly memorable") and an enormously bracing Allegro. (There is no scherzo.)The Fourth Symphony is the best known of Taneyev's symphonies. It begins with a striking tritone idea and is again very rich melodically. At the end of the work Taneyev reprises all the best themes from the symphony (including the tritone idea) and, if the result sounds a little forced, it is undeniably effective. Performances and recording on this disc are very good. An urgent recommendation!
