Having seen this a few times on VHS tape and a few more times on DVD, I was interested to witness how its Blu-ray incarnation turned out. Upon originally picking up the Shriek Show Blu the first thing I did was flip out the older DVD from the same company (Shriek Show was a banner of Media Blasters) to compare shot-to-shot. Initially the SS Blu-ray looked a little messy to be honest but comparison with the DVD revealed a better composition first and foremost - previously closer to 1.78:1 it was now framed at 1.66:1. This is likely to be the accurate ratio as many Euro films were shot/screened in this manner around the period and before. The DVD was interlaced whereas the Blu-ray was progressive (at 24fps), reducing jagged edges. Detail and contrast was improved by a small amount in the Blu-ray though grain consequently also increased, quite a bit. Also of note was the fact that the audio (DTS-HD stereo) was a little fuller on the Blu-ray disc, the DVD sounding a tad tinny after going back. So whilst it didn't look great, direct checks between the SS DVD and Blu discs revealed improvements, modest though they may have been. The DVD was rendered almost unwatchable after sitting through the original HD version (though see the point about the running time below).

Media Blasters (i.e. Shriek Show) also exhumed from somewhere a number of outtakes that I'm surprised even exist! For someone who's seen the movie around fifteen times this is quite fascinating material, depicting various further interactions between the characters and even a bit more undead mayhem. This piece runs nearly ten minutes albeit without looped dialogue or sound effects - instead it simply plays against the movie's music track.Read more ›

I have always enjoyed this zombie film. Another favourtite of mine. I really like the look of the zombies and the music. I have also have to mention the beautiful Mariangela Giordano and Michael the son of Mirangela played by the legendary Peter Bark.

I think Peter plays his character good who has thing about his mother. I like some of the classic lines in this film. like "Mother, this cloth smells of death!" and "What's wrong? I'm your son!". Some of the gore effects of course now look fake and dated, but this was pretty low budget film and i think the effects mostly look good.

Picture quality: 3.5/5

I think it looks good compared to my old Shriek Show DVD. It does have some problems. Like the Chroma noise. It has random little pixels of red, green, blue and so on. It`s not supposed to be there. It`s an error/artifact. I am sure there is some actual film grain also mixed in with the Chroma noise.

Despite, it looks better than my DVD. Some good details and the gore and blood looks better. Also think this film was restored too dark. It does have some minor and not so minor black crush, due to it being too dark. The DVD actually was the right opposite, it was too bright. Seems like they can`t get it just right.

Audio quality: 4/5

The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 dual Mono mix actually was good. The music and some surprisingly bass from the pistols. I don`t remember anything wrong with it.

One of the better zombie movies. This has very slow plodding Italian style zombies that are great to look at. Although similar in storyline to Night of the Living Dead this is far superior to any of Romero's zombie films. It has some good gore including beheading, moments of dark humor and even mild incest. It always surprises me when zombies are this slow and plodding, why people decide to run in a building. Oh well, the zombies are fun, at one stage they all pick up weapons and one of them can climb. The Italians have always made the best zombie movies and this is no exception.

This is one of my favourite zombie flicks of all time no plot, no subtlety, no reasons for anythin. Ten minutes in the dead rise and a mansion full of people start to die! Get that six pack chilled good and ready!

SEE! Latex guts galore spew across yer screen!
SEE! Eyes gouged and stomachs ripped open!
SEE! The freakiest kid in film history get a little too close to momma!

This film has been released and re-released under a variety of different names, I myself own the vipco version "The Zombie Dead" usual Vipco bargain basement fare no extras to speak of and the sound is a bit ropey. I usually pop it on, sound muted with some decent tunes playing instead (the Cramps seems to go well!) and off you go!

Crackin stuff...

Also known as Burial Ground, this gory Italian horror delivers plenty of gut munching set pieces, but little on plot which is virtually non existant. The plot for what it is, concerns three couples who have been summoned by a Professor to his isolated mansion to discuss his discoveries on bringing the dead back to life. One couple George and Evelyn are accompanied by their creepy son Michael. Unfortunately for the guests it soon becomes apparent that the Prof has been all too successful as the house is surrounded by hordes of hungry rotting(and very mobile) cavaders.
Despite the hideous fashions, hilarious dubbing and lack of cohesion of this film, it can be extremely unnerving at times. This is mainly down to two reasons. The first one is the progtastic psychedelica/electronica used as the soundtrack. It really is quite wonderful music, and really deserves a much better film to accompany it. The second reason is the extrodinary child-man/man child Michael. Imagine the sinister offspring of a liason between Andre Previn and Robert Helpmann and your only halway there.(actor Peter Bark was reputedly in his mid twenties when he played the role). Just to mention the zombies as well. They do look pretty good, with maggots and worms crawling out from every orifice, and shuffling towards their next meal with sinister purpose.
So, if after 80 or so minutes, and your still waiting for a plot, or are wondering if there was meant to be one in the first place, just try to enjoy this film for what it is, a highly enjoyable slice of euro horror, with no purpose above trying to both entertain and disgust its audience, a task it succeeds in admirably. 4 out of 5
As for the Vipco DVD, well the picture quality is pretty good, one of Vipco's better transfers, and the sound is crisp and clear. There are the usual Vipco extras of stills gallery, trailers and filmographies. 4 out of 5 also
