Digital Dream L'Espion Xtra Digital Camera [0.3MP]

Digital Dream L'Espion Xtra Digital Camera [0.3MP]

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
It may only be 2mm wider than its predecessor, but the new L'Espion Extra micro-sized digital camera offers a higher resolution image, a metal chassis and four times the memory to store images.

The original L'Espion digital was a phenomenal success due to its minute size and the new improved L'Espion Extra looks to continue this with again, a tiny size, but with a far greater image quality and a nice shiny metal outer case. The pull up viewfinder does take some getting use to especially if you've used a camera or digital camera with a conventional viewfinder before as it can be quite difficult to line up the subject matter, but with a bit of practice it becomes a lot easier.

The L'Espion Extra ships with both PhotoExpress image editing software and EyeStar Mail Webcam/Webmail software making it an ideal camera for the novice user. The software is very easy to use and will keep the whole family entertained for ages. The PhotoExpress software is a great introduction to digital image manipulation, and with the software you can enhance your digital snaps.

The camera can also be used for capturing short video clips--albeit without audio. Also, connecting the camera to your PC will allow you to capture video footage and e-mail it around the world with the included Eyestar Mail software. You can store up to 492 images at the lowest setting (400x300) and 169 (800x600) at the highest. There is enough memory to capture up to 26 seconds of video footage. Other features on the camera include a self-timer, auto power off, and a small LCD screen for displaying information such as battery level and number of pictures left.

If you were happy with the original L'Espion camera, you'll be blown away with the Extra. It's small, compact and slips easily into your pocket. The image quality completely overshadows its predecessor. The included software is a real bonus and makes this one of the best micro-sized digital cameras in its price range. --Martin Snelling

Manufacturer's Description
'L'espion Xtra – Compact digital camera This one is something special: A tiny digital camera no bigger than a matchbox that still manages to pack in some of the most advanced features available on the market today. Not only will the L'espion Xtr hold up to 478 images on its internal memory, but it can also serve as a web cam in conjunction with your PC and will even record short video movies up to 27 seconds long. There's even a self-timer that allows you to get in on the action yourself, while the unit's inbuilt LiteSync technology ensures that you can take quality snaps even in low lighting conditions. There might be digital cameras with more features out there, but none in a gadget this robust or compact.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best palm-size camera so far, 22 Oct 2002
The L'Espion Xtra is an excellent next-step in miniature digital cameras. Having owned both the original L'Espion and the SiPix Blink I can say the L'Espion Xtra outshines both these cameras in every single respect. The L'Espion Xtra is easily the best of the in-your-palm under 1 megapixel camera's currently available for it's physical size, picture quality, picture resolution, ease of use and battery lifetime.

The Xtra can take a massive 800x600pixel pictures and store 170 of them at a time, beating both the SiPix and the original L'Espion for both photo size and storage. If this isn't enough, the Xtra's low-res mode can take and store 220 pictures at 352x288pixels. If you owned the orignal L'Espion you'll know that 352x288 was it's hi-res format and stored only 20 of these, so the L'Espion Xtra is an extremely well worthwhile upgrade. The images are of better quality to the original L'Espion and Blink cameras, and has the advantage that - unlike the original L'Espion and Blink - it does not suffer from rounding the picture at the edges as if it was taken through a slight fish-eye lense. Instead the L'Espion Xtra takes perfectly formed pictures with no such edge distortion.

You'll be pleased to hear that the L'espion Xtra can still create movie files by taking multiple pictures at high speed and sticking them together in AVI format with it's free software - but now at a much higher resolution than before. And just like it's predecessors, the L'Espion Xtra makes a perfectly servicable webcam, but this time it comes with a standard mini-tripod threaded hole (you can buy mini-tripods quite cheaply).

The Xtra is very similar in appearance to the original L'Espion, but more smartly engineered. Being only a few millimetres larger than the original, the Xtra is still tiny enough to hide in your closed fist and sits unnoticed in it's leather pouch when attached to your belt. Likewise attaching it to your keys via the keychain will not bulk out your pocket. The LCD screen has been moved to the back of the Xtra where it is much more useful, and enlarged in both size and information - the interface is very easy to use and no longer consists of two-digit codes - everything is presented in full-length words and obvious icons. The interface now uses two buttons on the back for easy navigation and selection, instead of using the shutter button.

The camera still beeps quietly (unlike the frighteningly loud SiPix Blink) to let you know when a picture has been taken but not alert people nearby that someone is taking pictures, but features a small green LED on the front so your subject can see that you're finished taking their picture. Less importantly, the L'espion Xtra still has it's cute pop-up viewfinder: it's usefulness and accuracy is still rather debatable, and it is much better to learn to shoot without it. Also the AAA battery access is better engineered, with a small hatch for inserting/removing instead of the whole bottom of the camera sliding off as in the original L'Espion.

For anyone buying an in-your-palm under 1 megapixel camera, the L'espion Xtra is the one to buy. For anyone who already owns the original L'Espion or the SiPix Blink, it's time to upgrade. As an added bonus for owners of the original L'Espion, the L'Espion Xtra comes with the same format of mini-USB cable - so now you have a spare!

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware the USB and the Webcamsoftware under XP, 19 Nov 2002
By gulshesh (Germany) - See all my reviews
Hi! I've just bought the l'espion Xtra, and my story is as follows:

After pluging in the cam into the usb-cable, the usb-software installed itself twice. Or it needed 2 sets of drivers, dunno...
I've got XP home... The 2nd install just broke off with an error-msg. After experimenting for aprox. 2 hours, and de and reinstalling the drivers and the software, the TWAIN screen stayed empty all the time. Only after deinstalling the usb-drivers over the systems-menu, and reinstalling them MANNUALY, over the sys-menu the 2nd batch of drivers were found and installed correctly.
The DigitalDream Homepage hasn't got their own product in the dropdownmenus! And there are NO DRIVERS WHAT SO EVER (18.11.2002)
THAT is a serious lack of customer friendlyness and support!

The Eye-Cam-Webcam-Software doesn't work, and tells me to check on the video cable, although I've got the TWAIN working at last, and can download the pics and avis.

So if you've got problems downloading the pics (not seeing any pics in the TWAIN) get a friend with computerknowledge to install the USBdrivers manually. And hope that the support at DigitalDream catches up soon.

The Cam itself is good. nice design, acceptable Pics, and enough space. But don't rely on their support.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll have a blast with this camera, 27 Nov 2002
The l'espion xtra digital camera is truly a great piece of hardware, When I told my friends that I was getting a digital camera they were all saying things like "what's the point" and "why are you getting one of them?" but when i showed them the size they all quickly took notice and (no doubt) felt a little jealous.

The camera is so much fun, and it looks so hi tech and nifty. Wherever I go nowadays i bring along the camera, It's so small I can fit it in my pocket and (at times) forget its even there! It's great, I truly won't miss another one of those "kodak moments" ever again.

The picture quality varies, in poor light pictures are poor, in day light pictures come out at there best and in a well lit room the camera does its magic. The picture quality as a whole is not at all bad, my only complaint is pictures tend to be a little dull, But anyone who can use the software provided or use an alternative (I tend to enhance my photos with Paint Shop Pro) can quickly get the best out of there cameras pictures.

It's good, it's fun and it's definetly something you'll not be afraid to show off, I'm sure that some people may think the camera only deserves 4 stars because the picture quality isn't earth shattering, but in my view it does the job, the price doesn't make your eyes water and it's the only camera i have ever seen that looks cute... and thats coming from a guy.
