Synopsis
For his 27th film, the 'sensei' of Japanese cinema, Akira Kurosawa, transposes Shakespeare's KING LEAR to feudal Japan. RAN, which translates as 'chaos' or 'turmoil', is the tragic tale of Lord Hidetora, a warlord who decides to divide his empire among his three sons on the eve of his 70th birthday. However, Hidetora's youngest and most compassionate son, Saburo, defiantly objects to this hasty decision and is disowned by the proud, stubborn ruler. Once the two eldest sons take control of the empire, they quickly turn on their father and begin vying for total control over the land. As Hidetora is banished from his own kingdom in a bloody battle, he must confront the consequences of his violent, ruthless past. Ten years in the making, RAN represents the culmination of Kurosawa's career by revisiting his skill at adapting Shakespeare, as evidenced in THRONE OF BLOOD, and displaying the cinematic splendor of his other landmark films such as SEVEN SAMURAI and RASHOMON. With its magnificent costumes, breathtaking settings, and amazingly photographed battle sequences, the film is truly stunning. An epic on the grandest of scales, RAN is not only one of Kurosawa's finest films, it is a glorious masterpiece of Japanese cinema.

4.0 out of 5 stars Master film, print okay., 3 Mar 2005
By Michael Lavocah (Norwich, England) - See all my reviews
I shan't attempt to review this magnificent film, Kurosawa's best in colour. This review is for the new Warner Home Video DVD release of Ran. It is presented in its correct aspect ratio (1.85:1) with English subtitles overlaid directly on to the print - you can't turn them off. The colours are highly saturated, making me suspect this is based on the 2003 US Masterworks release, but I am not sure. So the transfer is not perfect, but even so a big improvement over the dreadful Fox Lorber version.

The film is an incredible bargain at this price - you should be able to pick this up for a tenner or less. Watch it on the biggest screen you can - this film is truly epic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Classic, 17 Jul 2005
By A Customer
Suppose we take one of the greatest tragedies ever written (King Lear), by the greatest playwright of all time (Shakespeare), put it in the hands of one of film's most inspired directors (Akira Kurosawa) and set it in Samurai-era Japan. The result? Ran, a stunning, nay, mindblowing picture. Anyone with a passing interest in tragedy/Japan/classic films, watch this.

Anyone who's played 'Shogun: Total War', you've already had a preview, because they used shots from Ran in the intro (the old guy and the fiery arrows and the cavalry et cetera).

As for the quality of this DVD? I would have to agree with a previous reviewer, the quality isn't as good as it could be. Nevertheless, I would watch and enjoy this film even if it was on a titchy 2" screen and the sound was played on tiny little earphones.

The Warner/Studio Canal double-discer also includes a 70minute making of Ran which is useful for those interested.
