4.0 out of 5 stars Streets of London, 6 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Once again Camden has reclaimed the title of "Kingdom of Cool", propelled there by the boisterous, rowdy rhythms of...not Brits but (mostly) Portuguese. Some years ago in Camden you could not spit without hitting a member of the musical trend known as "Britpop" (Oasis Quo, Bluh! et al). Now you can spit to your heart's content while pogoing/moshing along to The Parkinsons. Heralded as the new Sex Pistols, but not as contrived, and a welcome relief to the teen-angst, overproduced Nu-Metal, their new EP, "Streets of London" presents three raw, feverish tracks for those who like "a bit of rough" in their sterile lives.
First, "Bedsit City" is about the banality and dejection of the lonely lives led by a large part of Londoners. Next a steel guitar intro brings to mind an imminent gunfight in the lawless Wild West, setting the scene perfectly for the song, "Somerstown", about a deprived, rough area of North London and leads into a dubby reggaeish track, not unlike the early Clash. Finally, "Pill" is a popular crowd chantalong and describes a drug-fuelled flight from reality. But to really experience to Parkinsons' phenomenon you must see them live.
