Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

0Mac OS X 10.2 contains more than 150 new features and provides significant enhancements to its modern, Unix-based foundation. From AOL-compatible instant messaging to advanced junk mail filtering and a revolutionary Web search tool, Mac OS X 10.2 is as innovative as the computers that run it.

With iChat, the AOL-compatible instant messenger, you can chat with your AOL and Mac.com buddies through a fun, easy-to-use interface. Sherlock 3, the new Web search tool, delivers stock quotes, maps, restaurants, and more without a browser. QuickTime 6 supports MPEG-4, the new worldwide standard for playing and viewing pro-quality audio and video over the Internet. This new version also includes Rendezvous, a revolutionary networking technology that lets you link computers and devices instantly without any configuration.

Another cool new feature is Inkwell, which lets you write on a graphics tablet, and Mac OS X 10.2 turns your handwriting into typed text at the cursor in any application. And with new compatibility built into Mac OS X 10.2, sharing files, using Windows documents, and connecting to a Windows network have never been easier. And it easily runs Microsoft Office. For business users, Mac OS X 10.2 comes with Active Directory interoperability, and with a PPTP-based VPN (virtual private network) client that allows Mac users to connect remotely to Windows corporate networks.

Mac OS X 10.2's complete suite of professional-quality developer tools now features GCC 3.1, which radically improves C++ build times and standards compliance. The updated Interface Builder makes it easier to group, lock, and drag Aqua controls between windows for rapid user-interface creation. And, perhaps best of all, these professional tools are still included with every copy of Mac OS X 10.2, empowering Java, C, and AppleScript Studio developers to do their best work on the Macintosh platform.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silly name, great OS, 25 Oct 2002
By A Customer
It would appear that this software addresses some of the problems reported with 10.1; I never had 10.1, but I'm not suffering any of the problems I have heard about, so I suppose Apple must have cracked it.

10.2 was a big leap for me, from the humble 8.1. I am still struggling to make sense of some of its features, but everything is very, very solid. Whenever I am confused by the way the desktop's functions have changed, it's because it have become more 'Windows-like'. This is a bit of a shame, since it often requires an extra click, or more burrowing in nested pull-down menus than before, but that's the price you pay for flexibility!
Solidity: I occasionally get problems with individual (old) applications quitting, but these have never locked the machine up, nor corrupted any data.

Buying new versions of all my software to work under OSX is not something I intend to do. They'll be gradually replaced over the next three years or so, I'm sure, but there will always be a need to launch the odd 'classic' application. For this reason, I am delighted to see that the included version of OS9 runs very smoothly. (I have a single 800MHz processor, and I've suffered no speed problems.)

I was disappointed not to get a paper manual with my computer. I know nobody is going to read such a thing from cover to cover, but it would have been nice to have a reference guide. Maybe you get more if you buy 10.2 as an upgrade than I got with my machine. I hope so.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a bit of a Beast!, 10 Dec 2002

I was a little hesitent about buying OSX for my iMac, especially as it isn't totally compatible with OS9 applications, but I'm very happy to say I needn't have worried!
Installation is child's-play, just pop in the cd follow the very simple on screen instructions. - You don't even have to install 'X' onto a separate partition of your hard drive.
As for compatibility with OS9 and old applications, there isn't really a problem there either, if there isn't an OSX update on the internet for it - as long as you have OS9.1 or later installed, any time you need an old application just launch classic mode, and it will run very smoothy along-side OSX, you can even switch between the two anytime you require something from the other.

The new 'Aqua' interface looks and feels stunning!! some of the features are similar to 0S9, so you won't feel too out of depth, and some are new, such as the dock at the bottom of the screen for launching programs and organizing windows.
I love the little touches that have been added, such as the way icons bounce up and down in the dock as they are being launched and how the windows minimalise just like a genie!
Other improvements include multiple users, which is a 100% improvement over OS9, the new "Mail" application, with junk mail filtering (a lot better than outlook express) as well as "iPhoto" a much needed application if you have a digital camera, and for those unfortunate enough not to use a Mac, improved sharing with window's computers too.

All in all a very powerful, highly stable new OS (you can even relaunch the finder without affecting other programs.) A very worthwhile upgrade, miles ahead of it's rivals & now the bugs from earlier releases have been ironed out and there is a lot more support for it, a great time to buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hiatus, 4 Sep 2002
Mac OS X 10.2 is a most valuable update. I have a relatively slow machine a 333MHZ power Mac. Which was running OS 8.6 I installed Jag, which was very easily done, it runs at a good speed. The text rendering engine of particular note. Web sites in internet explorer look great. The interface as a whole is lush. It's a shame a lot of Java script does not work. I would recommend this software. Far better than the old OS 8/9 series which was pretty poor...
