The full versions of these two superb pieces seem to be hard to find on CD - the shortened "suite" versions being far more commonplace - so finding them both together, in full, on this CD is very pleasing. They are both full-bodied modern (1997) recordings too and the performances are very good indeed.

The only disappointment is that Kent Nagano has opted for the 1947 version of Petrushka rather than the 1911 original. To be fair there doesn't seem to be that much difference between the two scores but I'd have to agree with the general consensus that the 1911 has the edge.

Both these pieces are full of wonderful musical ideas, fantastically inventive writing and vivid orchestration. Petrushka even has plenty of great tunes as it conjures up its magical world of Russian fairgrounds, puppet shows, puppet on puppet violence (honestly) and other strange goings on. Personally I'd take Stravinsky's Petrushka over his stodgy and over-rated Rite of Spring any day.

The booklet is very informative too and is adorned with, er, a black and white picture of a tree. It's a nice pic but its relevance to the music escapes me. No matter, this is an excellent CD and is highly recommended.
