4.0 out of 5 stars Not the TOP GUN of Flight-Combat games..., 8 Dec 2002
By Mr. C. Barron (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews

...but not that bad at all. Unfortunately there are no other "Flight Sim" games on our beloved CUBE to measure this to. In fact this is the first. However, quite suprisingly, it's actually pretty decent.

I owned the PS2 counterpart, which was pretty much a no-go, especially when taking into account the far superior efforts of the Ace Combat series.

However, the CUBE release of TOP GUN has been extensively overhauled. The graphics are indeed, awesome, when recalling the lacklustre PS2 version, although this is not to say they are in the same league as Rogue Leader et al. Nevertheless, it is pleasant enough to proffer enough eye candy to keep most gamers satisfied.

The audio is also improved, coming out in a nice surround mix on my home-theatre system. Enemies do seem to be behind you then in front of you, which, of course, adds to the overall atmosphere and involvement of the game.

Moreover, and without a doubt, more importantly, the game play has been further tweaked, and is far more responsive than the PS2 release. Even using the 'expert' control set-up, I found controlling my fighter much smoother and in a way, more natural - very Ace Combat 4 in fact.

There is quite a bit to unlock in the game and the single player missions can be quite extensive, although, as to be expected in this genre of game, somewhat linear.

So, if you were a fan of Ace Combat and the likes, this should not fail disappoint, but it is unlikely to have any real appeal for those of you who prefer plump Italian plumbers to Mach 2 fighter-attack warplanes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Gun ,Top Game., 19 Jun 2003
This game is very explosive and fast with fighter jets going faster than the speed of sound and all the missiles that you would want.On the hole the game is pretty easy to complete but it is hard to get beter medals to get more aircraft. The detail on the aircraft is very good and the computer is very sofisticated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Top Gun, 14 Mar 2003
Top Gun is an ok game. It doesn't strike me as a particulary brilliant game that you would rush out and buy. The game's good features are found in its graphics and game play during air to air combat. A down side to the game for me is the lack of difficulty and levels it is far to short!! Another problem is that the game is not very realistic and basically requires very little skill to play making it simplistic and easy to any good gamer. The game basically involves you flying around in different fighter jets and firing missiles at moving or stationary targets. Although the basics of the game are there any advanced skills that you may need to master are simply non-exsistant which makes the game far too easy.
I would only buy this game if you enjoy flying around shooting missles in straight lines.
