Synopsis
With THE MATRIX, the Wachowskis have established themselves as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking STAR WARS, THE MATRIX (also the first film of a trilogy) showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in films such as THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2, the Wachowskis were the first to use "bullet time," a time-bending digital effect that utilizes both computer-generated imagery and still photography.
The film itself is a complex story that aspires to mythology, focusing on a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) who searches for the truth behind the mysterious force known as the Matrix. He finds his answer with a group of strangers led by the charismatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). What they encounter in confronting that truth makes for a lightning-paced, eye-popping thrill ride of a movie. Packed with stunning fight scenes (choreographed by accomplished Hong Kong director Yuen Wo-Ping), astonishing visual effects, quotable lines, and a terrific supporting cast (led by Carrie-Anne Moss, in her first major Hollywood film), THE MATRIX is a bold triumph that raises the bar for all science fiction films.

5.0 out of 5 stars The fil is great and the movie is stupendous., 22 Oct 2003
This film is simply one of the best films I have ever seen...add the amazing gift things (high quality slipcase, 35mm image in frame, etc.) which I'm always a sap for, and you get simply the best "Matrix" version out there. Plus there's the indispensable "Matrix Revisited" DVD, which has great insight into how they made the film, plus info about the upcoming ones (Matrix 2 and 3).I can't recommend this enough.

If you're buying this (which you should, definitely), and you're into the psychology part of it (reality vs. simulated reality, etc.), then buy these as well:

"Simulacra and Simulation (The Body, in Theory: Histories of Cultural Materialism)" by Jean Baudrillard

"Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World" by Kevin Kelly
"Introducing Evolutionary Psychology" by Dylan Evans; et al

"The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real (Popular Culture and Philosophy,V. 3)" by William Irwin.

The Matrix redefines cinema and bridge the gap between film and reality. To call it a rip off is a baseless insult to those who are 5000 times more seeing and visionary than yourself. Bravo to the Boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown Away.........., 5 Nov 2003

Blown Away.
I could never have envisaged a world so good. Does that sound like a quote? Is not a quote from the DVD, but it is from me!

Bought the Gold Edition, and am proud. My original DVD cost me about £30 when it came out, but this two-box set is now a collectors item and my old, scratched DVD is resigned to the bin (ashtray)! There is - can I say - too much on this DVD two-box set!

Which will you pick?
