Outstanding..., 29 May 2003
Driver2... well what can I say... this has to be the best game on the GBA I have played so far. I was a huge fan of the Driver series on PSone and PS2, along with GTA3, Vice City and indeed The Getaway - the absolute freedom of driving around a city causing havoc and avoiding the 'rozzers' in unbeatable. So the GBA version of Driver2 then... Upon purchasing this game I had high hopes, but was not expecting it to be anywhere near as good as the PS2 version in terms of graphics and gameplay, well... thankfully my expectations where totally surpassed. The graphics on this game are unbelievable, its literally like looking at the PS2 version but from about 20 yards away. The tiny graphics are somewhat blocky, but this makes no difference to the gameplay whatsoever, and it plays exactly the same. The traffic is clearly visible, and there appears to be little, if not any slow down when there's more than a couple of cars on the screen at one time. When you leave the car, the main characters sprite (Tanner) looks like a worm, but you cant expect miracles with a game of this build on the GBA. The buildings are well drawn and the car graphics are pretty much top notch. You lose the ability to look left and look right, which makes dodging police a little difficult, but you do have rear view, which is very satisfactory when watching the police plough into oncoming traffic that you've only just managed to dodge yourself. The missions are exactly the same as the PS2 version, with the learning curve set perfectly. By the time you've managed to learn the handling of the cars, the missions start to become more and more challenging. You may find yourself trying a mission a handful of times before you complete it, but this doesnt get boring (although maybe a little frustrating at times) because each time you play a mission its different, what with traffic and pedestrians being in different places each time etc. You still have the ability to "Take a Ride" which lets you drive around freely, with no time limit and only the police trying to stop you - there's nothing better than causing havoc by crashing through dustbins, road bollards, or indeed other vehicles, and this "Take a Ride" option also helps you get to grips with shortcuts which may benefit you in later missions. The sheer scale of the city is impressive too, and im still amazed at how this game was ever converted to GBA. Once you've completed the game you may never play the missions again, but its pretty certain you may sit there one day and think "what the heck... lets have a little burn around town" and you'll come back again and again for the free ride sections of the game. There is a link possibility too, so a real life "cops n robbers" with your mates is a must! Overall then, if you loved Driver, GTA or The Getaway on PS2, you'll love this game. If you've never had the fortune of playing these games then buy this for your GBA and be totally amazed at what the little fella is capable of. This game is a must for all GBA owners, and a sheer masterpiece! Infogrames (now operating as Atari) teamed with Reflections, its a gamers dream! This has most definitely set a bench mark for GTA on GameBoy, and will definitely keep you occupied til this is released.
