Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Anyone who's caught Manu Chao and his band Radio Bemba Sound System at one of their live gigs will testify that the Parisian troubadour sure knows how to throw a party. This live album draws on reggae, salsa and Latin pop classics from Chao's first two excellent solo albums (Clandestino and Proxima Estacion: Esperanza) and joyous gems from his time leading the more punk tinged Mano Negra. While the styles vary as often as the languages (Chao flits from Spanish to English to French as he translates his life as a global nomad into his music), the common thread is a sense of vitality and hope. From the uplifting reggae of "Bienvenida a Tijuana" to the African pop and salsa of "Casa Babylon", Chao is the pied piper of multiculturalism, leading his crowd on a (literally) merry dance. And it's the crowd that really makes these 29 tracks come into their own. You can almost picture the mob waving, cheering, blowing whistles, shouting into megaphones and generally having the wildest time this side of Rio Mardi Gras. This is a great flashback for those harking after Chao live and a perfect introduction to his excellence for recent converts. --Ian Watson

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb production, 28 Dec 2002
By A Customer
To my mind this is the best Manu Chao album yet. It is superbly produced by France's leading record producer. If you have actually seen the group live you will realise that this really does capture the feel of it. The rhythms are varied. It starts slowly and builds up to a hectic crescendo. In fact it keeps doing that all the way through. One minor criticism would be that the sleeve tries to pretend that this is a recording of the highlights of the whole tour. In fact it's just the recording of one night in Manu's home town of Paris in July 2001. Probably if they had done a second recording of the show they would have replaced the version of 'Por el suelo' with one where Manu doesn't start singing in the wrong place!! Never mind- if you enjoyed one of the best live shows ever, you will enjoy this: one of the best live albums ever. Listening to this it is easy to see the influence the Clash and Stiff Little Fingers had on Manu's live show. I saw him live in Lille a couple of weeks after this show and it was a fantastic performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Storming, 16 Sep 2002

This album will set your pulse racing, make your heart beat faster, light a fire under you. It really is awesome. I listened to it in my car after buying it and almost crashed several times.

Think Bob Marley, Joe Strummer and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs all rolled into one and on speed.

If you have the two studio albums as well, don't hesitate to buy this as well. There is plenty of stuff you won't have heard and (as you would expect) the versions of the songs you will know are entirely different. Some have been made more to sound like straight, laid-back reggae, in other cases you should be prepared for some punk-ska barnstorming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manu Chao finally live....., 10 Sep 2002
Manu Chao is without any doubt one of the best live bands in the world, even after only 2 albums. Every single gig is a party, with not only songs from the albums, but also from Manu's past with Mano Negra. Nobody who visits this site hasn't heard of King Kong 5, and most of the people have probably danced to King of the Bongo, Me Gustas Tu or another one of their fab songs. Now, you have the chance to relive it all at home. All the hits are there, and even though it is impossible to capture the atmosphere of their live shows on CD, this is one of the happiest CD's I've ever listened to. Whenever you feel a little bit down, just put this in your CD player, and I guarantee you that you'll be dancing and jumping around the room before the 3th song starts. There is nothing negative to say about the record, just buy it, you won't regret it. Listen to the new version of King of the Bongo, and play it over, over and over, and be sooooo happy that they released this. As you might have guessed, I rather enjoyed this album. And I just know you will too.

This is a live album and while it is full of energy, every single song is effectively done at the same tempo. So after a while it all just blurs into an aural mush. Read more
