Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Judging from the diminutive size of Konica's KD-400Z, most people assume it's little more than a digital toy. In reality, a whopping 4.13 mega-pixel CCD lurks within the camera's sleek stainless steel and silver plastic frame capable of capturing images with outstanding detail.

The KD-400Z is also the first four megapixel digital camera to incorporate both SD and Memory Stick slots, and it can use both types of memory simultaneously. The SD slot will also work with MMC cards.

The camera has fewer buttons on the back than most digital cameras in this price range, but that's only because it is designed to be so easy to use. Most menus that appear on the crisp, colour LCD screen are navigated using a small four-way switch, and a button next to that switch is used to activate highlighted menu items. Other buttons allow for the easy viewing and deleting of images and also to control the camera's 3x optical zoom. A digital zoom is also available, but as with all digital cameras, digital zoom results in reduced image quality.

Powering up the device is as easy as sliding back the protective lens cover on the front. The camera springs into action almost instantly, and zooming also works very quickly compared to most digital cameras. Pressing the shutter button down halfway activates the autofocus, and also causes a blue light on the front of the camera to illuminate so subjects know a picture is about to be taken.

Although there are no manual controls for things like shutter speed and f-stop settings, the camera does offer enough control to take it one step beyond a basic point-and-shoot camera. The four-way switch can be pressed right or left to turn the flash on or off, change to macro or landscape shooting mode, set the self-timer, apply red-eye reduction, or set up a combination of these things.

Image quality is excellent. The CCD captures details that lesser cameras simply can't resolve, and exhibits exceptionally accurate colour reproduction. Outdoor shots look terrific with the exception of low-light and night shots, where the automatic-only shutter comes into play. Skin tones are accurate, and the camera takes good portraits, but red-eye is a big problem even with reduction enabled. We can only presume it is caused by the camera's flash being so close to the lens.

Regardless, this is an excellent automatic digital camera for those who don't want to fuss with manual controls at all but also want to capture more detail than point-and-shoot 2MP cameras can handle. The included 16 MB SD memory card is skimpy for a camera that generates images at a native resolution of 2307 x 1704 pixels, and you'll probably want another set of rechargeable batteries, but otherwise the KD-400Z's price and performance offer very little to complain about. --T Byrl Baker

5.0 out of 5 stars Armour-clad Beauty that's a Steal, 6 Sep 2002
By A. Saunders (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The KD-400Z is a tiny stainless steel alloy armoured object with sliding visor which protects the lens. Sliding it to one side results in the fastest startup of any digital camera, three blue LEDS alternately flshing, windows-like music (from the built in speaker)and a lightening fast silent zoom prodding out and ready for action in under 2 seconds.

The camera has limited manual features and is essentially, a very sophisticated point and shoot. Manual features include macro, slash overides, AE compensation, slow synch for nightime, spot metering and focus lock. The camera lack TIFF file settings but the normal mode generates pictures of unexpected quality - with focusing down to 4 inches on the surprisingly sharp lens. It is possible to review images without turning the camera on and up to nine can be examained at once. Images are highly reolved and colours are generally satisfying with a sightly warm cast and marginal levels of curvature on macro.

Despite the rapid startup time, it takes around 4 seconds between shots for processing highest quality images (a little longer with flash).

The camera is extremely ergonomic and despite its micro size, is easily operated by those with large hands. Some menu items are buried a little deeply in the menu structure - but the only thing which is difficult is setting data and time imprints. The manual is unfortunately only on CD, but the 3-colour menu system and options for simple or detailed menus suit all users.

The lack of manual speed setting results in blurring of moving subjects in low-light conditions and the absence of metering modes doesn't help this. Ironically, the camera allows you to view speed and apertures for each shot after the damage is done. Konica have seemingly built a beautifully crafted camera, but the protruding screen and plastic trip bush and battery/card cover let its armour-plating down. Videos are of characteristically low quality - but at least they have sound. It is unsatisfactory that they are limited to 15 seconds on all card sizes.

The ability to handle two cards is excellent and data can be copied from one to the other. Approximately 176 normal compression 4 mpx images and 76 on best quality can be held on a single 128 mb. memory stick. Battery life is reasonable with 60-85 images possible with basic use of screen and zoom. Downloading is faultless but drains the battery, so a card reader is a useful option along with spare battery.

The camera's price is currently around 30% less than its rivals. It's rather beautiful, extremely finished with solid buttons and high apparent build quality. Pictures offer high resolution in normal mode and produce quite stunning quality for a camera of this type and size, with very litle noise in low-light conditions. With case, spare battery and large flash card as extras the price goes up - but this is typical of the way most digital cameras are sold these days.

Konica is not one of the largest camera makers, but they've been around at least as long as most of their more widely known rivals. I've used their cameras since the 1970s and they have generally proved reliable and recent models have had above average lens quality fo their price. The KD-400Z certainly has the latter - producing images which are better than similar tiny digitals. This keenest of Konicas is very much an object of desire and relatively affordable - try it and you just might fall in love with this tiny wonder which sits in you shirt pocket without being noticed - available at all times, close to your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best camera, 30 Aug 2002
This is the best digital camera for the average user. It is solidly built, easy to use and, most importantly of all, has virtually NO DELAY between pressig the shutter and the picture taking. Battery life is more than a 64MB card can hold at max detail. The pictures are superb. This camera is fantastic value for money and beats the other big names hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a blinder, 29 Dec 2002
Being new to the world of point and click digital cameras (having previously owned a Canon Ixus APS camera), I wanted something simple to use, compact enough to take out and about without looking like papparazzi, which still took great photos and I have to say I am enormously impressed with this Konica. With the addition of an extra battery and a 128mb SD card, you can take anything from 72 full resolution, finest quality photos, to over 900 at 640/480, surely enough for even the most avid holiday snapper. Only criticism I would give is the quality of the anti red-eye flash, but its a tiny gripe for what is an excellent mini camers
