Whose orchestral works? Zelenka is not a well-known composer: born in Bohemia he spent much of his career in Dresden. The majority of his compositions are sacred works and some instrumental pieces, but his orchestral output was small and consists of a mere ten works with unfamiliar titles: 7 Capriccios, 2 Symphonias and a Hipocondrie. They date from the 1720s and are essentially suites of dances, with no fixed format, played by small ensemble groups and solo instruments with a basso continuo accompaniment.
Zelenka is very much a composer of the baroque era. His style has more Bach to it than Vivaldi, and if you like the Brandenburg Concerti then this music will probably appeal to you. The wind instruments are prominent over the strings, with many of the solo parts being given to the oboe and the corno da caccia (hunting or natural horn). Indeed the horn gives the music much of its tonal character, with the composer pushing the performers to the limits with an astonishing range of notes. Another characteristic of the music is that is not as formalised and predictable as many baroque works - for example there are some unexpected breaks in tempo to keep the listener's interest.
These three CDs were originally issued separately and have been repackaged at a bargain price. One unfortunate aspect of the cost-saving is that the three original insert booklets have been reissued unaltered, when a judiciously edited single cohesive booklet would have removed unnecessary duplication and made for an easier read. But the music is wonderful. These are excellent performances on period instruments by an enthusiastic and able orchestra and are pure enjoyment to listen to. Recommended.

This is the only complete Zelenka orchestral on period instruments as far as I know. There's a beautiful single disc on Supraphon but it's worth getting the lot as it's all Baroque music that is as good as it gets. Playing is very fine and sound recording good. Underrated stuff, if you enjoy Baroque music, there's a few hours of delight here.
