Synopsis
Director Ridley Scott's hauntingly prescient vision of the not-too-distant future stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a retired police assassin, or blade runner. The Los Angeles of 2019 is a dark, polluted, overcrowded dystopia dominated by cloud-piercing buildings and looming neon billboards, the air dense with acid rain and flying traffic. World-weary Deckard has been called out of retirement to liquidate four escaped replicants--genetically derived androids of great strength, intelligence, and nearly-human emotion who serve as slaves and prostitutes in the off-planet colonies. Led by Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), they've come to Los Angeles to confront their designer, Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkel), with their unhappiness about the brevity of their four-year life span. In the course of his search, Deckard becomes romantically entwined with Tyrell's lovely assistant, Rachael (Sean Young), and must eventually confront Batty in an unforgettable rain-soaked sequence. A highly influential fusion of the science fiction and noir genres based on the novel DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie but at a premium price, 4 Sep 2004
Not much more can be said about this classic movie itself. The script, direction and of course the acting is faultless and worthy of being voted Best Science Fiction Movie of all time (which it has been). Vangelis's music only adding to the atmosphere.

As far as this package is concerned, you of course get a copy of the Director's Cut edition of the movie, but whether it is worth paying the difference between a basic copy and this package is debatable. If you are into collecting or reading screenplays, then this might be worthwhile. Owning a screenplay for a movie whose brilliance is in what is not said, rather in the atmosphere that is created, leaves me puzzled as to why you would want to. You get a poster, well who pins up posters these days? You also get a numbered frame from the movie and some photographs. Quite frankly unless you are a Blade Runner geek or have more money than sense, invest in the Director's Cut version and save the balance and put it towards buying 2001 or Alien.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do Androids Dream?, 5 Nov 2006
By Tim Bentley (Shetland, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Philip K Dick wrote the seminal book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" in 1968 and it was adapted into a movie in 1982. This movie was "Blade Runner", a movie by Ridley Scott.

The movie centres around Rick Deckard, a cop, one of the elite Blade Runners tasked with finding run away androids known as "replicants". The Blade Runner's job is to 'retire' the replicant, i.e. terminate them. In the course of the hunt for a band of the very latest Nexus 6 series of replicants, Deckard meets Dr Eldon Tyrell the creator of the replicants and his niece Rachel. This meeting starts a chain reaction in Deckard causing him to question everything that he is and everything that he might become.

This movie asks certain specific questions of the viewer, namely:
"What constitutes humanity?" and
"If a 'product' passes the Turing test does that make it a truly conscious being?"
"How do we know our memories are real and not the 'gifted' implant of a manufacturing corporation?"

When taken in the context of the psychological questioning plot line this movie has the potential to be disturbing. When taken as a piece of art showing the desperate side of the remnants of humanity clutching at a dark and dying earth, you can see the genius of Ridley Scotts vision of an environmentally damaged world. When taken as a cop movie with a rogue policeman dragged from retirement to perform a task he hates, you'll be entertained.

The casting is marvellous with Harrison Ford in his prime playing the perfect Deckard and the remarkable Rutger Hauer playing his best role as Deckards adversary Roy Batty, a combat model Nexus 6, the leader of the replicants. Sean Young's Rachel adds a fragility that makes the production all the more poignant.

On the whole, a film I enjoyed, a setting that I appreciated and performances I applauded. This film is very much a must for all sci-fi movie buffs and enthusiasts.
