Amazon.co.uk Review

The famous Nazi basher, BJ Blazkowicz, is back at long last in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, nearly a decade after Wolfenstein 3-D began the first-person shooter genre.

Set during World War II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein finds the Nazis dabbling in the black arts in an effort to raise a demonic prince from the dead and create an army of uber soldats. Naturally, Blazkowicz is the only thing that can stop this supernatural onslaught, so he's sent behind enemy lines in an effort to stop Himmler and his evil lieutenant Deaths Head.

On the surface, the single-player game seems like pure gold. The graphics look great and the catacomb levels are non-stop action as the armies of the undead are intent on sucking your brains out and serving them up on Melba toast.

This is not the longest game in the world although this special edition does go some way to rectifying that, containing as it does the original game, new multi-player maps, the WolfRadiant map editor, the making of Return to Castle Wolfenstein feature AVI and the full version of the game that started it all, Wolfenstein 3-D. The best thing about Return to Castle Wolfenstein is its team-based multi-player mode. Each multi-player adventure features Axis vs. Allies and both sides offer four character classes: engineer (removes obstacles), medic (heals and revives team-mates), lieutenant (calls in air strikes and replenishes ammo) and soldier (only class able to use sniper rifles, flamethrowers and other unusual weapons). The game includes only eight multiplayer maps, but they are all perfectly designed, and in order to be successful teams have to work together. The result is a great gaming experience that fans of Counter-Strike or the "Day of Defeat" mode for Half-Life will really appreciate.

Graphically, Return to Castle Wolfenstein looks amazing. It uses the powerful Quake III engine to great effect and the character models, explosions and lighting effects are all perfectly done. --Jason Trebegger

Product Description

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Special Edition offers all seven official post-release multiplayer maps developed by Nerve Software and Splash Damage, including Chateau, Dam, Ice, Keep, Rocket, Tram and Trenchtoast. Plus, the special edition also features demos and trailers of several other popular titles powered by id Software's legendary Quake III Arena engine. For gamers craving even more Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Special Edition also delivers Behind Enemy Lines, the official making-of video as well as wallpapers, screenshots and cartoons for fans to savour the action on their desktop.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Special Edition is a supernatural World War II adventure where gamers are thrust into a last ditch offensive against Himmler's SS paranormal division. In addition to an action-packed story-driven single-player experience versus the Third Reich, the title's multiplayer mode enlists gamers to hone their tactical skills in squad-based combat scenarios. Players will join the fight as an axis or ally soldier and be challenged to intense, realistic campaigns such as storming beachheads, infiltrating military installations, holding strategic positions, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy!, 3 Sep 2002
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is probably the best First Person Shooter that i have ever played. The graphics are amazing and the same can be said about the gameplay. It took me nearly two weeks of solid gameplaying to complete it and i must admit that I loved it and i hope that there will be a sequel to it released on the PC.

The special edition gives you extra multiplayer levels that are really cool and totally new. The game is worth every penny and all FPS fans should have it. The single player game has 7 long, hard missions that are split up into parts and altogether there are 26 parts that are bound to keep you interested, especially with all the cutscenes that are played in between some of the levels.

4.0 out of 5 stars real good fun, 8 Dec 2002

I'm not a big video games enthusiast, I only really bought this game because I was looking for something to play on my computer to pass the time. The last First-Person Shooter I played was Half-Life, and while this doesn't quite match that on most terms, it's just as much fun.

The game is extremely well thought out. It's very scary in some parts, and often it's very atmospheric. The level of difficulty is balanced very well throughout the game, especially on the third mission, which starts off as a very tough stealth operation but leads to a really fun storm through an enemy base. It can be very hard though, even on medium difficulty setting.

The only major dissapointment I had with the game was at the end. The final boss is actually pretty easy, which makes for a bit of an anti-climax. The ending is also quite rubbish but hey, you don't really play games like this for the story.

I would definately reccomend this game to anyone. It's easy to get into, and you'll probably want to play it again. The Special Edition also comes with lots of extra stuff, including the original Wolfenstein 3D, which is interesting if not a fantastic gaming experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic in your monitor, 23 Nov 2003

Now...I'm a major critic, and a very bias one. All my life I've been slaving my thumbs on driving games...its just my thing. So when my friend lends me 'RTCW', i thought, well its worth a try. He gave me it at the start of my university holiday and for 4 whole months i played, conquered and came up with my verdict. This game is just the greatest game ever created, and we're not talking graphics, effects...but the atmosphere it projects to its player. From the dungeons to the cable cars to the x-labs, the tension and overall concept is just breathtaking. Never have i been so enthralled with a marvellous storyline, which i wish was longer...the villains, the super soldiers...just great stuff!
