5.0 out of 5 stars Something Special, 9 July 2002
By Mr. R. Shields (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It seems like Patton and DEP belong together. Irony is a Dead Scene confirms Dillinger's progression, not exactly changing dramatically but perfecting on a style they alone seem to have invented. Patton has reformed their sound slightly with use of percussion, and a wider vocal range which old vocalist Dimitri seemed to lack [but then again how else can keep up with the rest of the band other than screaming?]. Those who remember seeing a DEP show in the past few months might recognise the opening track 'When good dogs do Bad Things'. This track sums up Dillinger Escape Plan in my opinion, like all the best parts from Calculating Infinity compressed into 6 minutes, except for Pattons input, which is totally spot on. Haunting wails, perverted crooning and a sound that reminds me of Dr Zoidberg from futurama [blrurlrblrlburlburlb].
'Pig Latin' the e.ps second track, seems to be taken a little less seriously as Patton puts on some sexy vocals worthy of Peeping Tom before breaking into a Fantomas style chorus. This song is definitely more Patton oriented, "Rock Paper Scissors" [formerally 'Hollywood Squares'] on the other hand belongs to DEP. Even though this is the weakest of the 4 tracks, it's an amazing all out brutal speed fest. I'm happy to see Patton manages to keep up with the rest of the band.
The icing on the cake though is the final track, a cover of Aphex Twin's 'Come To Daddy'. I think you'll agree that if any band can cover this song, it's this band. They do a good job of it too.
There you have it. Not exactly a groundbreaking E.P. like Under the Running Board but essential for any DEP/Patton fan. Get it, you'll see what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars MIKE BABY!!!, 24 Nov 2002
Mike Patton with Dillinger escape plan? Who could have guessed? The (in)famous psycho metallers and the manic ex faith no more frontman really goes together. Although this EP only has 4 tracks it really is worth every pence. At first I thought that this was way too weird for me but I listened to it again and again and again and it grew onto me. To finally hear Mike Patton push his singing to the extreme is a wonderfull thing. Buy this album now and hail this crazy piece of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars the peak of Dillinger's carrer, (so far), 17 Oct 2006
Mike Patton + DEP = pure insanity.

There should have been a full length album instead of an EP at this point of Dillingers career.. but nonetheless, this fleeting moment of brilliance is an amazing piece of pure insanity. Mike Patton solves the only problem that I have had with past DEP releases, and that is the repetitive and often annoying vocals. Mike Patton's voice does many things on this, but one thing he doesn't do is get repetitive. The music itself is even a different kind of machine than that of 'Calculating Infinity'. You can hear bits of electronica scattered here and there and that is no doubt Mike Patton in the workings.

Overall this is an unhinged bit of brutality for any fan of heavy music, and an inspiration for the future success of 'Miss Machine'.. Do not pass this up.
