The simply sublime Dionne Warwick collection
Heartbreaker contains at least 20 of pop's most exquisite moments, drawn principally from her dazzling 1960s heyday.
Discovered by songwriting genius Burt Bacharach while caroling backing vocals for the Drifters in 1962, Warwick's silky mezzo-soprano was soon gracefully gliding over a succession of Bacharach and Hal David sculpted gems. Burt's sumptuous arrangements--featuring his trademark muted trumpets, reflective strings and intricate jazz-mottled rhythms--coupled with Hal's witty wordplay and Dionne's subtle, perfectly phrased delivery, propelled the humble pop song towards high art. Many of those hits are here. "Walk On By", "Don't Make Me Over", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" are all timeless classics, though the omission of the less celebrated, but equally opulent likes of "Promises, Promises" and "Are You There (With Another Girl)" is a tad disappointing. Sadly, after the partnership dissolved in 1970, Dionne's recording career never fully recovered, although "Then Came You", a US chart-topper with the Detroit Spinners, is an infectious slice of sweetly cooed R&B pop. --Chris King
