Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Boom Bip's Seed To Sun comes fresh from his work with Cincinnati geek rap pioneer Doseone, and now that he's firmly ensconced in his new home--the Warp-affiliated hip-hop label Lex--it seems that now's the perfect time for American sound scientist to drop his debut solo album. Seed To Sun isn't exactly hip-hop, and it isn't exactly anything else, either: a mad kaleidoscope of drones and glitches, loops and melodies that displays a passion for organic sounds--cymbal splashes, the thrum of double bass, what sounds suspiciously like a French horn--yet revels in all the multifarious possibilities of digital production. Occasionally, Bip looms a little too close to past electronica templates--let your concentration drift while you're listening to "Closed Shoulders", and you'll swear that someone's popped a Boards Of Canada CD on while you weren't looking. "Pulse All Over" is the album's most plainly beautiful moment--a heavenly drone symphony that'll leave a lump in your throat. And while a couple of excellent collaborations with Anticon rappers Buck 65 and Doseone suggest that maybe Boom Bip is at his best when in a production role rather than fronting as an artist in his own right, Seed To Sun contains enough thrilling moments to justify its own existence. --Louis Pattison

Muzik Magazine, September 2002

"Uneasy listening, a future downbeat classic, ... a beguiling slice of American Gothic, ... should put Boom Bip firmly on the map."

3.0 out of 5 stars Beats n' pieces, 12 April 2005

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Boom Bip travels a fairly worn road with his blend of instrumental hip hop and electronica. There are some great moments but by and large this is fairly uninspired stuff. Opener 'Roads Must Roll' is blissed-out trip hop complete with tuneful scratching and violins, while 'Third Stream' is all clunking rythmns and noodly basslines reminiscent of DJ Krush. Elsewhere there is experimental techno, ambient and highly abstract hip hop, much of which is pleasing enough to the ear if not a little derivative. The highlight is 'Mannequin Hand Trapdoor I Reminder' with long-term collaborator Dose One of Clouddead, with ingenious use of whispered rapping swelling into a moment of twisted pop perfection. To name a few comparisons, you tick boxes next to Shadow, Krush, Prefuse 73, Bonobo, RJD2 etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just melt..., 27 Jan 2004
By A Customer
When I bought this album, I actually expected Hip Hop as it's signed on Lex.
I was pleasantly surprised when I heard beats and melodies comparable to Boards Of Canada.
Chilled and intelligent, this album is a must have. It starts off with Roads Must Roll, a happy yet dreamy tune that introduces you well to the rest of the album.
The two songs which contain rapping are to say the least different, in the best way possible. Mannequin Hand Trapdoor I reminder is by far my favorite tune on the album, the skillful rapping of Doseone leads through a soothing and unusual song. The Use Of Unacceptable Colors In Nature is another beautiful and dark track. Basically, you'd be a fool not to buy it.

This review is from: Seed to Sun [VINYL] (Vinyl)
boom bip isnt your average dr dre or dj premier and being on lex and close to the anticon boys ,i wouldnt expect him to be.the style is very abstract and i wouldnt recomend this to anyone who like a good choice of lyrics and heavy beats but then again this isnt made to be like that.theres also the expected appearences of mc's buck 65 and dose one ,and nacky koma who provide the lyrics for three of the songs but the rest are just instrumentals.also check out the first track which is of a recently aired car advert.this is a good album and is a must have if your into this kind music.bye for now.
